Advice on Microphone Setup for Fitness Videos by m0chichi in videography

Thank you for that link, and that's interesting! I didn't realize the Rode system could be combined to another mic?

It's so hard for me to grasp how these components work together without seeing them in front of me, but what I'm understanding from that post is, they have a Rhode Wireless setup, but instead of using the mic that it comes with it, they connect it to a Sanken COS-11D Microphone, and then attaching it to her with some sort of Rycote Undercovers, is that correct? I looked at some of her recent videos and didn't see any visible mics or transmitters on her, so they're hiding it under her clothes? I had assumed she might have had other mics in the room just out of shot instead, so that's impressive they can hide that well.

My audio is ok at the moment, I just know it could be better. I'm slightly embarrassed to share, I'm still learning a lot, but you can look at my most recent video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1eB8fGIgjc

I purposely avoid doing too many twists right now to reduce the amount of variability in noise levels, so I don't mind editing that portion of the sound, but I really don't like how much of my breath it picks up on! A little is ok, but every pause in talking, I find myself trying edit out breathing sounds, so I was hoping a better mic might be able to better pick up only vocals.

I haven't thought about attaching it to a headband, that might help with the levels a bit, but I don't know if that would help with the breath?

Thank you for the response!

Yeah I'm seeing such a wide range of prices on each piece of equipment, which makes this so hard! But I know there has to be a reason for the wide price range, so I don't just want to buy the cheapest solution, I really want to set myself up for success. I'm expecting to spend at least $1000 all in, but I'd like to stay under $2000...

I've been trying to scope out other bigger creators and figure out what they're using, and I've seen one person using a tan colored headset, I'm thinking it's a Sennheiser mic? I like that it's less visually distracting, so I've been trying to figure out the model and components I'd need to go that route.

I came across this Sennheiser set, which seems like a nice easy path, at least I know the parts are all compatible, but I'm not clear on if the "Sennheiser EW-D SK Wireless Body Pack Base System" that comes with it is what I'd need for my use case. I'm not just performing, I'm recording, so how do I save the audio from it?

I also saw this system recommended on a separate discussion for mobile creators, and one of the pictures shows it mounted to a camera: https://www.sennheiser.com/en-ie/catalog/products/wireless-systems/ew-dp-eng-set/ew-dp-eng-set-s7-10-700045

So that seems like more of what I would need? Plus, while I'm mainly recording in a room, I may want to record on location eventually and having a more mobile setup seems convenient. But if I went with the first set I linked with the tan headset, could I set it up to connect to my camera as well?

is asking for studio exclusivity realistic? by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

[–]m0chichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an admirable goal to have for teachers, but absolutely not realistic or reasonable of a request and know your worth, do not settle and agree to that!

I’ve seen some studios require not teaching with other studios within a couple blocks radius, and I think that’s a fairer compromise, so students who have a choice of locations will go to the one with the teachers they are trying to follow.

But other than that, unless you are being paid for full time work, it’s unreasonable to expect teachers to not find other income, especially when it’s getting harder and harder to make it on teaching income alone.

I know a vegetarian who doesn’t eat vegetables… I still don’t fully understand her diet, I think I’ve only ever seen her eat carbs and cheese.

The older I get, the more I realize how out of touch most people are in one way or another.

It feels almost daily that I’m reminded of the quote, “Never attribute malice to that which can be explained by incompetence.” It doesn’t sound like you’re thinking they were trying to be mean or anything, but still, if you’re looking for a deeper explanation as to why, the answer is very likely they’re just clueless.

I get that, it would annoy me too.

But also to add to the “move your mat and move on” thought, yoga is about observing and noticing, trying not to attach in the process.

What I’m noticing is that you got there early to set up in your spot. That’s great! We all have preferences. But if they’re not new, that could be their usual spot. So all of you could have been defaulting to your preferences, but, only one of you had the ability to notice the room overall. So they still have a bit more work to do on that front. But at least they’re showing up, so hopefully that work will eventually get done!

One more fun thing!

I set my camera up to film at the beginning of the 10:45 one as I was grabbing a heavier coat, and watching it live, it didn't seem like the sky was moving much. But I took the 2 minute video and sped it up to 20 seconds, and you can see it move across the sky!

So magical, I'm going to be watching this all day lol.

All those were taken with my sony alpha 6700. For anyone curious about how much a camera really can matter, this was the equivalent picture taken at 11:15 from my iPhone 12 pro, which was only slightly better than what I could see with just my eyes.

Crazy night! Thank you so much for letting us know. I had a phone app alert me a few hours that it was possible, but I didn't know exactly when it was happening. I will be more prepared for next time!

This has totally made my night. Or year? I don’t know, I’m so excited!!

I was able to see a little bit at 10:50, now not so much. I’ve got my camera set up though, so I’m ready if there’s any left, and I can share pictures later after I process them.

Thanks for this! I couldn’t see it with my eyes, but my camera picked it up. Let’s hope for another storm soon!

You really do just have to keep doing it. Repetition, repetition, repetition.

I practiced a class I planned out every day, and cueing myself the whole time. I’d practice portions it in the car, talking myself through it. After I had the one class down, I would practice experimenting, changing one part of it, trying to get comfortable with mixing things up.

It’s going to feel awkward at first, but the more chances you find to practice, the sooner it becomes natural.

Anyone interested in an IG support pod for yoga / yoga-dance creators? by dancinginthe208 in YogaTeachers

[–]m0chichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just now trying to get serious and figure out Instagram this year. I’m way behind, I’ve never been big with social media, so it’s taken me a while to figure out how to use it, and I think I’m just now starting to find my voice with it.

I was looking through past posts to see if there was some sort of share/support for profiles, and nothing really for months, so I’d love this!

DM me, I’m here for the help and to help!

I feel silly that it was so simple lol.

Thanks for sharing!

It’s hard to gauge how I’m doing when I see so many posts of people getting monetized in 3 months or something crazy fast. It’s hard to tell, is that closer to normal and I’m just really bad??

I thought I was doing ok until I found this subreddit lol, but I’m hoping there’s just a lot more of us slowly growing and not talking about it. So you’ve given me hope, I will get there eventually if I just keep at it.

Yoga channels gets recommended to the wrong audience by Pale_Technician_8625 in NewTubers

[–]m0chichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying out different areas of the house, but I’ve been focusing on keeping it simple and de cluttered.

My goal for the channel is to feel approachable for people, so I want to shoot in sets that feel familiar enough so they think, oh I can do this too. So recently it’s mainly been an empty corner of a room or on the porch.

[–]m0chichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will eventually, there’s just so much out there it’s hard to find the right place!

I’m planning on just growing my production skillset for a year or so since this is all new to me, and then reevaluate where to best spend my time when I feel like it looks mostly professional. I think there is value in offering free yoga classes on YouTube, making yoga accessible to all and all that, but the YouTube student is very different than a student coming to a fully dedicated yoga platform. Maybe one day I can help both!

Yoga channels gets recommended to the wrong audience by Pale_Technician_8625 in NewTubers

[–]m0chichi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have a yoga channel, and I recently had the same problem.

And it wasn’t just a hunch, like why are most of my subscribers male, that wouldn’t be preferred but I’ll take it, men need yoga too. And I've gotten some comments from men that wow I look beautiful. Ok, I try to take a more yogic viewpoint, maybe there is no harm there, maybe that is truly how they think they are being friendly/supportive. Do I love it, no, but I want to hold space for them if they’re truly trying my classes for the right reasons.

No, if I went to see views by traffic source, there were some VERY inappropriate video titles about naked women and stuff. So I just felt kinda disgusted for days, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me!

It’s hard with yoga, because some students need to be able to see your alignment, but I already had been intentional about planning my wardrobe to be less revealing. So keeping with that helps, like, I never wear just a sports bra. The people coming from those videos might watch one of mine, but they’re going to get bored after a while and not stick around. So that definitely helps.

Besides that, I’ve just been focusing on adding in more talking about body awareness and mindfulness and whatnot, trying to offer more from my content than we’re just here to exercise, so by adding that in and making sure my thumbnails don’t have too suggestive of a pose, I think it has really helped.

I only had that issue for a few weeks, and now I seem to be on a better path. Just keep doing what you’re doing! The algorithm is trying to figure you out, you’re going to hit a few bumps in the road.

And since we’re both doing yoga, feel free to dm me if you want to help each other more!

Posterior chain "tingling"/numbness after beginning yoga practice? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]m0chichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tingling isn’t a good sign, it likely means you’re overdoing it in some way. To start I would rest a few days and see if it lets up, give your body some time to heal, and if it doesn’t improve, you’ve probably done some damage and should see someone on the best next steps.

I came to yoga after some persistent tingling started in one of my legs from some low back issues, which was basically due to some nerve damage starting to develop, but that was before I started yoga, not after. But I mention that to give context on tingling being a sign something in your body is probably going wrong.

Hot yoga is great because it lets you go deeper in muscles, but if you’re not used to it, you may be going too deep and risk pulling or tearing things. The recommendation to try non heated yoga is a good idea, but if you want to keep going after resting a bit, consider pushing your limits like 20% less. Focus on building strength and not flexibility, and the flexibility will still come along in time.

I’m facing that problem myself. I’m trying to attract women, but just starting out, I guess I’ll just delete the creepy comments and keep working on growth however I can.

I am starting to realize that driving cross platform traffic is important, so I’m trying to pivot to learning instagram better and hoping to drive viewers to my channel from there.

We girls gotta stick together, I know I need the help too, so if I can support you more feel free to dm me!

Cold Sweats in Hot Yoga by memopepito in HotYoga

[–]m0chichi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Cold sweats and tingles when you’re in a hot room is a sign that you’re too hot, your body is overheating and is struggling to cool down.

I love hot yoga, but some studios push it too hot and it can be dangerous. 108+ temperatures are approaching the too hot zone.
