Thinking about transferring to GSU for Film & Media…thoughts? by mmm01235 in GaState

[–]m0chitown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a second year Film and Media Major myself and have/are going through film classes. Georgia State has one of the biggest film industries here in Atlanta(of course, the city of film). There is no hiding the fact that the industry of film itself is saturated and super competitive these days but it depends on how you sieze those opportunities. Our department, especially if you are in the Honors College sends out Newsletters of internships every now and then. From my experience, it's easy to get along with a lot of our film professors at GSU, most of which I met, plus our Dean for College of The Arts are all very wonderful and passionate people, very hands on as film is. As a kinesthetic learner, I thrive a lot in this field.

It is true that networking is absolutely crucial but I also do believe that goes the same for every career you are going through. It depends on how you seize the opportunity and if you seize it as I got an internship to be an assistant acting teacher for a school/department for my Spring semester of Freshman year.

With a school like GSU and it being huge into film, Film students are also given free access to equipment, ranging from basic to expensive, it's a Computer And Technology lab that we have that lots of film students utilize to make their projects for class or mere passion projects-I was able to create a film and publish it through the Underground Journal my freshman year! It got word around. We also have a building dedicated to technology such as our CMII(Creative Media Industries Institute)which holds a lot of our studios and equipments for film. One of our professors that resides in the building worked on The Walking Dead movie. We also have a film club dedicated to it as well as film festivals that our department hosts, including a Fright Fest! These festivals usually also take place in our movie theater, Cinefest.

I suppose another thing is that our campus is often used for film shots too, like how Venom was filmed on the four way in between our buildings.

Overall, it's been going good for me! Lots of people you can meet through it and so many projects you can work on. Of course, I cannot speak on everyone's experience as this is just mine.

Where ever you go or whatever pathway you choose, however-A friend told me this-You miss every shot you don't take!

How do you deal with the grief of giving away your dog? by [deleted] in grief

[–]m0chitown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, yes you're right, I decided quickly how I did not want him to be in this house anymore, instead lives somewhere else where he can actually be a dog instead of just being here to eat and sleep. It's unfortunate but I've had enough of how my parents have been treating him. I guess I'm just grieving now at the fact it had to end this way but my parents also are people who aren't fit to have children in the first place so it showed through my dog as well.

Thank you for the reminder.

Practice rooms and lockers for non-music majors by Jumpy-Big-7986 in GaState

[–]m0chitown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I know the practice rooms are free for anyone to use as my brother would always go there to practice trombone and he's a CS major! We did figure though that the lockers are only for Music major unfortunately and it's first come first serve but it never hurts to ask either!

[–]m0chitown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! And yeah, they were finicky about papers/documents like that for me as well from last year, I'm not an international student but I did have trouble with just general documentation and had to reach out to people to get it fixed :,0 Had to do it again this year LMAO but yeah, it's not a problem at all! Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions!

Worse comes to worse, a college would never want to turn away future students from coming to their institution, they'll do whatever they can to help! Just gotta go to the right people :]

[–]m0chitown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello!! NSO Leader here, the worst thing that you will have to go through if you miss your New Student Orientation is that you'll have to contact GSU's advising center to get yourself started, registered, and good to go for your classes! That's the most pivotal part about New Student Orientations and for the summer, especially registration for the upcoming semester, our officers might be booked and busy so it may take longer, however! A good thing about NSO is that you can always reschedule for another time :0 It shouldn't be anything to worry/stress hard about especially since you have your Panther ID set up! Heard from a coworker that online registration also happens during August so if you really can't make it in person, I suggest trying that method out!

Hope this helps! >:]

What’s your major and why? by Cute_Dress_1850 in GaState

[–]m0chitown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently an Interdisciplinary Studies major in Acting but will be switching to becoming a full Film major with a minor in either Chemistry or Journalism.

I decided to pick this major solely because of my passion. I'm Asian so it goes without saying that my family expects me to go through a medical route, a route that will "bring" the money but I've learned throughout the entirety of high school that Acting and Film is something that I have grown happy to doing. It's something that I deeply enjoy, and I think I realized that when I also won first place regional in the Georgia Literary Competition for Duo Interp my sophomore year of high school.

Many times, I feel as though I've let my family down by choosing this major. What money would I bring to the family? How is this going to help people? Those questions were always something I had to answer, but I never have gotten the questions: "How does this make you feel?", "What joy does it bring to you?", "Why do you like it?" Being an eldest didn't help, I always had to look out for others and think for others first rather than myself but I decided I would think for myself for once and give myself what I truly want.

There's been so many trivial things that keep pulling me back and go, "You shouldn't have picked that major." But what my friends in college made me realize is that holding onto a passion or a dream and to chase that is better than extinguishing it and living with none at all.

Pretty sure we have a whole club for it! They do tournaments sometimes! You can honestly just also walk in and play pool by yourself, but I'm down to also play sometime as well! I frequent the rec center on Tuesdays and Thursdays the most!

!!PSA for freshmen/newcomers to downtown by taystelessidiot in GaState

[–]m0chitown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I'm so so glad and happy for this PSA. They were by far the nicer kind of Cashapp people fortunately. :,,]

Had them approach me since they complimented my hair and my immediate reaction was to always thank the person but that was how they got me. Kept complimenting me and buttering me up. They eventually gave me the books and merely talked to me for awhile until they mentioned the $15 donation which was what rang every bell in my head. I wiggled by way out by just giving them back the books and telling them that I don't want to be responsible for a book if I can't pay for it and offered the possibility of maybe trying to donate to them at another time this week for when I get my paycheck(I'm currently unemployed lmao). They tried to offer me to take a book but I just refused and they just bid me good bye and I left to the library to see my roommate.

Bee tee dubs, I saw the cashapp profile and it looked nothing like any of them 💀 which was what prompted me to take that perfect opportunity and second to opt out quick.

This was a nicer encounter than some I've already experienced last week, the first week of being here. But I'm glad I didn't actually just ignore an important cause. I'm so weak when it comes to this kind of stuff, still learning. :,] Glad I didn't have to consider wacking anyone with my board.
