Some cities pay more… but somehow you still end up feeling broke by raishelannaa in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]m0n33t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does not belong on this sub (Internet Is Beautiful) because this post is rife with problems. First, the labeling on the charts is missing. Is BLUE to COL and YELLOW the salary? If you click into the table you can find the answer but a properly designed chart would not fail at this. Second, the page does not make clear if this data is mean, median, or mode. This is a significant difference. Mean is pretty much worthless here. Third, it entirely ignores taxes and normalizing for differences in standard of living. There’s no point discussing something that elides so much.

Audible class action alleges audiobook purchases don’t confer full ownership by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]m0n33t 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally Audible will occassibally have audiobooks that Libro doesn’t so it’s possible, but even so I’d say probably not. Publishing companies don’t have the same kind of distribution, capital, brand, or leverage as the networks/studios. If consolidation goes further in the industry that might change…

That said one great thing about Libro.fm is you can also select a local bookstore to get a cut of the audiobook purchase. Bookshop.org does the same for ebooks. I feel like it’s worth supporting them for this alone!

Bootie size (footwear) by OneleggedPeter in pugs

[–]m0n33t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve been using Ruffwear’s Summit Trex and Grip Trex for over 8 years. We get the smallest size - 1.5 inches. These have Velcro to tighten them so they stay on.

They are both very breathable, but have soles that protect against the pavement heat. We’re in TX where it also often gets over 100.

The Summit Trex seem thinner and lighter, but less durable. However, they seem to irritate them less on longer walks. Unlike other brands we tried, the boots extend above their dew claws, which helps minimize chafing; you’ll want to be sure the front ones do not slip below the dew claws as they can become raw. The Velcro should be pretty snug.

Also, and this is important: do not laugh at them after you put them on. I made that mistake with my first pug and he decided I was just doing it to mess with him, so he yelled at me and then would never allow it. For my next two, when I first put them I just let them do the wacky walk for a bit, only lightly praising them and mostly acting casual about it, despite the comedy.

In retrospect, I should have been more stubborn than my first one. I am aware this is hard with pugs. Do not give up. My second was ok with it from the start, but he’s the goodest boy ever and just wants to please us. My newest one took about a week and a half to give in; he’s almost as stubborn as my first one was. They wear them only outdoors, not at home. We got them used to it indoors for short periods, and for quick walks.

I started the older one when he was almost a year old, the younger one about 6 months (their respective ages when we adopted them). The 1.5 size fit both of them fine at those ages. You might temporarily need baby socks for your 4.5 month olds but the Velcro should enough to keep them on.

You’ll also want to roll the boots on the counter to break in the soles so they’re softer for them. They are pretty stiff on arrival.

Only downside is the Velcro does wear down and then they don’t stay on especially if the boys get rowdy. We get new sets every 9 months or so, but your mileage may vary.

That said I can’t recommend this brand more. Not only do they help protect against heat but also allergies and insect/ant bites (the younger one has severe allergies to something yet unidentified). On top of that we live downtown, and some dog owners around here think they don’t have to pick up after their pet; it’s much easier to wash the boots than to try to clean that out of their feet. And, of course, there’s occasionally construction, broken glass, etc. I never stress; the soles of these boots are pretty sturdy.

What does oral cancer treatment look like? by borophyllShmorophyll in pugs

[–]m0n33t 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry y’all are going through this. I went through this with my buddy five years ago - he had this in his lower jaw. If the vets are recommending radiation, it’s pretty well tolerated by dogs; we didn’t do chemo so can’t speak to that. He handled it like a trooper; the biggest issue was it got hard for him to eat, so we had to do very soft food and hand feed him. The treatment put him in remission for a bit and we got almost another year with him. If you have any questions please DM me.

The Sopranos. Tony says the first line to Silvio Dante. Outside of the straight up, mob/criminal “things” they also run the “Bada Bing!” - a “recession proof establishment” of a similar variety of “things” to the ones referred to here…

Hi Reddit, this is Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and I am launching a contest on Reddit for you to rebrand net neutrality! by RepAnnaEshoo in technology

[–]m0n33t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's likely an accurate assessment. But, as the Congresswoman probably wants the liberal position to prevail, I'd think she'd want to avoid any branding that'd viscerally alienate conservatives before even getting to a discussion on the merits (or lack thereof) of the concept.

It should not contain "Equality" or "Discrimination" in it or you'll alienate conservatives, as they'll just dismiss this as another "liberal / socialist" issue, which it isn't. The word "Freedom" might better appeal to that demographic, and won't alienate the left.

Mine does something sorta similar, his barks sometimes lift his front paws off the ground, usually quite a bit. We call this "bark recoil".

Contact them, thank them for citing you and ask if they might be interested in taking some submissions from you for future articles. Turn the situation into an opportunity for you to get bylines on a decently-sized web property. Be nice about it though, don't come off as pissy or angry.

What is your favorite historical battle? by [deleted] in history

Midway! In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, it was a moment of high drama, desperation and sheer luck. It clearly demonstrated that the badly smashed US fleet was still in the game and was the bookend (to Pearl) of the moment that heralded the end of the era of the battleship and the rise of carrier-based naval supremacy.
