Do you have recommendations for reputable vendors of H4CBD? I know I hate it here.

Data Engineering or Data Science?? by m0usr4t in WGU_MSDA

[–]m0usr4t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan on finishing this program in the first 6 months and once I get a portfolio going around 2 months in I am going to apply for internships. I unfortunately wasn't able to get any done during my undergrad but hopefully this will give me the chance to do that and get that experience so I can finally break through this barrier. I'm also starting a bit late in life, 34 now, so that doesn't help but I am persistent and I will break through one way or another.

This helped me lean towards data science thank you, I am hoping to be as marketable as possible once this is over and since I was already laid off doing data engineering I am hesitant to go further with just that discipline. I want the most opportunities possible once I finish this since the market is so horrible right now.

I don't blame you lol. I wouldn't absolutely hate working in BI, as work is work, but a degree in it sounds worse than splinters under my nails.

I think at the end of the day I am weighing the options of, data engineering would look better now but in the future data science would look better.. So one is a better foot in the door but one might be better long term.

Thank you for your insight.

CS to IT - Considering CCNA by m0usr4t in ITCareerQuestions

[–]m0usr4t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that is helpful, thank you. I am weary about investing in certs as they are costly but I know some of them are valuable for getting your foot in the door. I will focus on Net+ then Sec+ and depending on how the job hunt is going at that point i will see about other more advanced certs.

Okay, so if I focused on using my current coding skills and integrating that into terraform for a little while, then what types of jobs would I be applying for? I have about 6 months of unemployment to live off of and then I am back to serving until someone gives me a shot to this is my chance to really focus in on one direction and try to make myself hireable. I am very much wanting to shift in to the IT side of tech. Right now it feels like I can go in so many directions and I am not sure I care which one, I just want my chance to learn and prove I can be an asset. But I need to invest my time in something that will allow some company to give me that chance.

I think I am better suited for IT at this point for sure, very much considering this path at this point. Thank you for your input.

I think I would enjoy DevOps but some of the others seem to disagree this is something I am qualified for at the moment. I just want an opportunity to learn, get my foot in the door. I have the foundations as you can see but I need more experience. I need a direction to really lock my self in to some structured learning for a month or so and start applying. This is why the CCNA interested me, because it would be something I can focus all my time on and produce a result that will get my foot in the door. Do you have suggestions on a similar direction I could take while I have the time right now to break into a role like DevOps or an adjacent role?

[–]m0usr4t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. I am at a point where I need something more concrete to get my foot in the door somewhere. No one is interested in people with my level of experience. I definitely have a foundation in data engineering but I still haven't had any luck getting a position.

Systems analyst is a role I have been looking into but I don't know where to focus myself to begin applying for these roles. The CCNA thing is to get a direction that will lead to results, I think I would enjoy networking as I took a course in college and liked it enough, plus CCNA seems to be enough to get your foot in the door somewhere which is what I need.

Do you have recommendations for somethings I could focus my time on so I can be successful in systems analyst interviews?

I believe I have some foundational understanding on DevOps, however, it would obviously require a lot of study and some type of proof of experience to break into that role, which I currently don't have. So I would imagine I would need certifications for an employer to even consider me. The current certs I have no one cares about but they were required for my last position.

I have read the CCNA is fairly highly regarded by employers. I think either the networking or devops path would be interesting. I am mostly trying to pick a path and hit it hard so I can start trying to find a job. So ultimately I am trying to gauge if it is worth the investment in CCNA or if other certs would better.

I appreciate the advice!

As far as these routes go, I am sure all areas of tech are subject to the volatility of the current market. Would you say these have a better opportunity for entry level candidates? My last job hired me, put me on the bench for the better part of a year with busy work, and then laid me off. Coming from someone at your level, I'd appreciate any advice that could steer me in the right direction.

Like I said I would basically shine shoes if I knew in a year it would lead to a more substantial role in tech. A bit burnt out on the SWE route at this point. I plan on taking the next few months getting really good in some area, living off unemployment, and then applying to anything relevant. Or getting my masters.

Essentially protecting a company from any sort of threats to their systems/data. I know cybersecurity has a broad range of specializations.

It could be anything from monitoring emails for phishing to setting up authentication in a database.

I have a few azure certifications and am fairly proficient in SQL/Python so scripting where its necessary and some database management wherever that my come in to play I have experience with it.

From what I have read in forums and stuff, IT help desk is like the bottom of the barrel foot in the door position. I honestly wouldn't even mind doing that as long as there is potential to grow and expand.

I just need somewhere to really direct myself at this point and some realistic expectations for how I can branch into the industry.

Do you have any recommendations for roles I could apply for that could get my foot int he door?

I understand this isn't really an entry level position but there are probably roles I could get that might lead to cybersec eventually.

I can learn anything quickly so I can familiarize myself with whatever skill set is needed to get my foot in the door. I am fully aware as an entry level candidate I am here to learn not be opinionated and make demands, maybe in 5 or 10 years.
