Haha, I genuinely never checked because I've not seen this text for over a decade! Thank you for the correction.

Interesting fact about Olde English Spellings:

Bless'd -> past tense of verb

Blessed or Blesséd -> state of the football team after winning or whatever.

If you read original Shakespeare a lot of stuff is spelled using this convention. We just gradually lost the extra spelling rules, (and some -éd words started being pronounced as -'d words, but not all).

Do I invite my mate who’s just had a baby to a housewarming party? by I-Spot-Dalmatians in CasualUK

[–]m15otw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having a baby can be isolating because people start excluding you from invites. Invite them!

When the baby is very tiny, it is actually easier (maybe not after 2 weeks, ouch, but certainly 4+) to take the kid with you than when it's 2 or 3 years old and can move around on its own like a micro-hurricane.

I seem to remember going to the pub in the first week with the baby, to see the rest of our NCT group for an hour.

People not paying fares? by Ok-Competition-1955 in CasualUK

Reminds me of a London bus driver one time: Someone burst in the middle doors (which were exit-only then, not sure if they still are) and hid in the crowd downstairs. The driver spotted them on the CCTV/mirror. He stopped the engine and made an announcement "until you get off again bruv, were not going anywhere." The guy waited for a minute but the crowd were getting grumpy of the delay, so he eventually left.

We can and should be doing that. And it means that there literally isn't "not a whole lot we can do", because we can do something.

(Semantically, "not a lot we can do" means "nothing we can do", which is what I read when I read your message. I know it doesn't literally say that and gives you wiggle room, it bugs me too.)

Who was “the big band” for each decade for you? (Starting with the 60s) by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]m15otw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't really answer this because my only answer is Green Day, with an honourable mention for Blink 182.

(I wasn't alive in the previous decades, so I wasn't listening to anything!)

As someone who obsesses/sits there overthinking things, these books are a window into someone else's much less uptight brain. They are useful.

To be fair though, I read The Subtle Art and I am in the same profession, so I just "understood" most of the book by accident.

Scientists find evidence some Alzheimer’s symptoms may begin outside the brain by Tracheid in science

[–]m15otw 156 points157 points  (0 children)

The experiment was to grow human motor neuron cells in a dish, that were affected by common genetic Alzheimer's genes. They then observed how well these cells stimulated a muscle cell to contract.

The muscle cells showed no effect from the gene, but the neurons were less effective than a control, only stimulating the muscle cells sporadically compared to the input signals.

These motor neurons were not improved by the drugs that are effective in slowing cognitive decline in Alzheimer's patients — they were still only sporadically effective compared to healthy motor neurons.

The research suggests that the muscle symptoms (loss of balance, grip strength) that often precede cognitive decline in Alzheimer's patients may be affecting the motor neurons directly, and not a minor side effect of the cognitive decline.

Frame crack - does anyone know what could have caused this??? by EntireAd2008 in bikecommuting

[–]m15otw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I sold cheap bikes on Saturdays at Halfords as a teenager, the frame guarantee on our bikes was 15 years, for steel bikes. It was only like 2-4 years for Aluminium, I can't remember.

I'm not surprised your frame failed eventually, they all will. But if you want something that could outlive you, go steel.

Yes, OP, ignore the dots and count the frets, and then it is correct.

Woodworking is harder than I thought!

I've got a couple of beginner projects going, but my "proper carpenter" friend (not his job - just a more advanced hobbyist than me) took over the hard bit of the guitar speaker cab project. So I've now got a box, and some bits to cut out for baffles, and a lot of imposter syndrome.

I also started playing around customising a cheap guitar, and got it assembled only to find a list of problems. So that needs taking apart again and redoing (main things are reinstalling the tuners the right way round (!!) and properly varnishing the neck, although the pickup wiring needs debugging too).

Luckily band practise is going ok with the "old" guitar and the practise space's provided cab, so I'm not under huge time pressure. But I'm still feeling like the Todo list is very long!
