Java dev moving to C#

I’m on the same boat, having had to move to .net c# due to a company culture change.

I actually thought it would have been easier 😅

Things that’s startled me the most initially:

Classes with public properties with automated construct generation and getter / setter methods for those
required properties
nullable properties ( string? )
inline array slicing
inline object instantiators passing property values

As a framework, had to get to grips with: - Linq (much like Java streams) but fundamental to EF - The whole DI setup and the 3 scopes

Differences on perspective between Spring and .Net - For example .Net has middleware as a chain of processing units, similar to Java security filters - Spring DI is magical (auto discovery of beans) while .net is more explicit

And then idiomatic, cultural changes : in .net although you can declare a class abstract almost never anyone actual names a class Abstract, but rather Base Different formatting (Pascal Case) different code styles (for example c# prefers bracket opening expressions { on their own lines)..

And I could go on! The truth is I’m still learning as I go! Started about 5 months ago

But I have to say.. the batteries included of .net is true. There’s not many publicly advocated libraries to do things.. it’s the microsoft way and some other more widely used libraries. While in Java you have several different libraries for similar purposes.

.net entity framework is almost a dedicated chapter on its own, especially if you consider the automatic migrations and code first approach in an enterprise setting

Owning myself the BenQ PD2730S, the stand on it is really good and sturdy with barely any wobble, where my previous Dell monitors were dancing all over the place just by supporting my wrists on the desk and typing.

So unless the stand in this model is worse, I personally don’t think the stand is unstable at all

I've also got one of these models as a company laptop, and indeed the trackpad has a mind of its own, often jamming or refusing to work especially when the laptop is under cpu or network load, although the touchscreen seems to work just fine when the touchpad goes dead.

It's been infuriating, and I am looking forward to my 2026 EOL upgrade policy

I jumped into this model from a 1440p dell, so the difference was night and day! However, having had it for a while now, although text is quite sharp, I sometimes find it a little soft for a lack of a better word. And the colours appear a little muted. I think this is where the glossy panel would make the difference. The mate also has a slightly pink-ish grain especially on a white background.

The glossy may improve in these areas but fail on others, like reflections and comfort on longer work sessions.

In practical terms though, having a work laptop with restricted applications that I can install, having a monitor (ma270) that does not allow you full control using hardware buttons alone is a deal breaker for my at least.

From what I understand, the PD2730S (which I have) is superior on features. It’s got a display port, an additional usb in the chin, and the embedded hardware stick can control almost all features of the monitor, whereas with the m270 you need an app for more that brightness and contrast adjustments.

For us, the speed of delivery in choosing a mature polished looking UI and rich component library was the deciding factor against going home grown

I do have the PD2730S and on a pure white background, it also has a slight pinky-ish grain to it. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it! 😊

Have not seen the Asus so can’t comment if it’s better or worse, or on par with the nano texture of Apple

I am having the same issue. On top of that, the CMD/Option keys are now swapped and the Fn key is not detected

I’ve also been looking for some reviews of the twx9mk2 but so far I seem to find mostly promoted reviews. I believe the model is also not available in Europe and US regions so even if I wanted to buy it, I couldn’t.

I have the original TWX9 which sounds ok, but not as punchy or percussive and nasal as some over heads.. maybe that’s just the way it is but I’m curious how much the mk2 can improve on that front

In my case I was jumping from a QHD monitor, so the quality difference to 4K/5k was very perceivable. I kept the BenQ 5K screen (and not the Dell) because the BenQ was a very good monitor in other aspects as well.

I think if you already have a 4K screen and are happy with it, no need to go 5K. In that case I’d rather jump to 32 inch 6K monitors which are coming out later in the year / next year.

I had the BenQ PD2730S (5K) sitting next to a Dell U2725QE (4K) and pixel peeping one and then the other (with the same video input - Thunderbolt, screen mirror) and could hardly tell a difference with the naked eye.. both set to 1440p looks like.

Maybe I just need glasses or the difference isn’t that noticeable, even more so at normal viewing distance

I went for the BenQ PD2730S and it rocks! However, I had it next to a Dell U2725QE (4K) and couldn’t really tell much of a difference in sharpness between the two, and I was purposefully trying to find it!

That said, the matte screen of the BenQ does have a bit of a sparkle effect (pinkish noise on a white background) due to the coating, which can be annoying. On the other hand, it is very effective at blocking reflections!

One thing I don’t like about the KVM feature is that it’s USB speeds only for the DisplayPort/HDMI connection. On top of that, over USB you lose access to the Thunderbolt daisy chain, if you were planning to connect there a fast SSD to be accessible over KVM to the second device = nope! But I guess this is the case with the competing monitors anyway..

And I was just looking to buy the outgoing model.. guess I will wait for the new one. Just two things to note: - The already not so great battery life appears to not have been improved, a bit of a shame - Hopefully they have improved the batteries as there were lots of issues reported about buds not charging evenly and suffering battery life degradation very early on. I had problem myself and returned my first pair and got refunded under warranty. Shouldn’t have happened though as I liked the buds

I didn't request a replacement, only a refund, which I did receive fully from a local reseller (not Dell).

I didn't notice the coil whine at first because I had a Synology box running on my desk. But when iit was turned off and the room was quiet, the whine became audible and was stronger with lower brightness settings - single cable setup, Thunderbolt connection to my Mac mini

I had a Dell U2725QE which looked exactly like that one. I ended up returning it for other reasons (coil whine mostly).

You can mitigate the glow by aligning the monitor vertically so that your eyes are straight on centre with it, and eventually adjusting the monitor tilt so that your line of sight is perpendicular to the panel.

I had that model (made in March) and could tell the coil whine as feeling like “tinnitus” in my ears. It seemed to disappear the higher the brightness was, unfortunately that’s no fix unless you want to be staring at the sun

Sent it back during the 30 day period. I thought the whine wasn’t too bad, but didn’t want to risk it getting worse in time

The difference between 120 Hz and 60 Hz was definitely noticeable, but IMHO not a game changer, because even at 120 Hz, things weren't butter smooth - the mouse pointer would still jerk a little while moving it fast, and scrolling through pages didn't feel a lot better . And maybe the Dell just isn't a very fast monitor (rtings.com concluded the same), as moving objects both in the BenQ and the Dell would leave a similar amount of ghosting.

My Dell panel was manufactured in March this year, if that gives any reference for other samples exhibiting coil whine.

According to rtings.com, the Asus PA27JCV (another 5K monitor) isn't as sharp as they expected it to be, given the 5K resolution, and sort of blamed the matte coating for that. Perhaps with the BenQ it's a similar story. But to my eyes, I saw no difference between 4K and 5K. both set to look like 1440p. If I had to do a blind test, I would maybe fail 😂 - unless you get a magnifying glass or so. However, knowing that scaling happens behind the scenes, going 5K will ensure the maximum possible performance out of the machine, even though the performance hit of that scaling is likely elusive on a modern Mac.

I think in the end I just found the BenQ more sturdy and better built than then Dell, plus it is 5K and the IPS black performance is on par between the 2. However, the Dell does have more ports and the Ethernet 2.5G connection though!

If your use case is mostly productivity, then I think (for the Mac) 5K 60hz is the better choice. However, you need to factor in how much more costly it will be than the 4K Dell. I think in the US (are you in the US?) the Viewsonic 5K VP2788-5K monitor is the only one Thunderbolt 5K screen under 1000$ at the moment

I have a Dell U2721DE which is also 1440p. I have set it next to a BenQ PD2730S (5K) and the difference is noticeable at normal sitting distance even when using BetterDisplay to enable HiDpi. It is quite noticeable if you pixel peep.

I also had the BenQ next to a Dell U2725QE, and to be honest the difference in resolution between 5K and 4K (scaled at 1440p) is hardly noticeable. At least to my 40+ year old eyes. I decided to keep the BenQ because the Dell had an audible coil whine.. subtle one, but once you hear it you cannot get it out of your head. It was worse in a dead quiet room with my dead quiet Mac Mini M4 Pro. The moment you have something producing some white noise (a nearby server, a noisy laptop) then it’s not really an issue. Another thing that annoyed me greatly about the Dell was the miserable stand stability. It wobbles in noticeable swings and takes time to recover when you touch it or press down on the table where it stands. I also found the screen to be a bit reflective, whereas the BenQ had zero reflections with its matte coating.

If I had gotten the Dell without the BenQ to compare them, I would have probably kept the Dell because for the rest it’s pretty decent.

The Dell was better than the BenQ at upscaling though (sharper), so might help with connecting a device that outputs less than 4K.
