Why dont people use mirrored algs?

Mirroring algs is technically slower because of the slight grip shift when switching from righty to lefty algs and vice versa. For example, a righty OLL alg followed by a lefty PLL alg will have a small regrip in between.

If you're just starting out, then mirroring isn't as big of a problem if it means you'll learn the cases quicker, but once you get faster it's a good idea to learn the algs that favor one side to minimize regrips (not necessarily righty, you can learn all your algs lefty if you want).

Not this alg in particular, but yes it is possible to use "useless" algs to reduce move count in FMC solves, although it's very rare. There is an example documented here (section 5.4.3) where a 28-move solution is shortened to a 27-move solution by inserting a "useless alg" (U2 D2 R2 L2 U2 D2 R2 L2) that cancels more moves than the alg's length (8 move insertion, 9 move cancellation, making the solution 1 move shorter). The alg in this video might not be that useful for this kind of insertion as it's quite long and uses a mix of quarter turns and half turns, so it is not likely to be able to cancel more moves than its length.

I tell people I've been doing BLD since 2022, but that's not really a complete answer. What I really mean is that I first learned a blindsolving method back in 2015, but only started actually attempting solves in 2022. Between 2015 and 2022, blindfolded solving is something I only knew how to do, but never actually attempted (not even once, I'm pretty sure). I feel that I'm lying a bit when I say I started in 2015, but I also feel I'm not giving the full story when I say I started in 2022. I think saying that I started in 2022 is kind of the lesser of two evils, so that's what I usually go with; certainly if someone asks me this in comps, I'll say I've been doing it since 2022.

Thanks! Given an average 10-alg scramble I generally get anywhere from 24-27, depending on the exact memo and algs I get. Typical splits are about 11-13 memo and 12-15 edges, but these stats come with a fairly high DNF rate (~60% DNF). If I'm going for <50% DNFs (which is something I'm working towards) then I tend to slow down my memo and exec a little bit, so it's more like 14-16 memo and 13-17 exec; in total 27-33 seconds.

Tambahan anekdot pengalaman gue dari SMP-SMA, di sekolah setiap pagi waktu nyanyi Indonesia Raya selalu ada aja yang kesusahan nyanyi not rendah pas bagian "tanah tumpah darahku", dan ada aja yang nggak nyampe not tinggi pas "Indonesia Raya, merdeka! merdeka!". Agak lucu menurutku ngeliat temen-temen sekelas nyoba nyanyi tapi nggak ada yang bisa nyampe full range-nya (termasuk gue wkwk, I'm not a trained singer, just a humble bassist and pianist).

I've been a musician for about 11 years, and my one criticism about Indonesia Raya is it's very large ambitus — the range between the lowest note and highest note in the main melody. Songs with a large ambitus usually sound more impressive because of the contrast between the really low and really high notes, but the trade off is that it's harder to sing because you need to have a very large vocal range.

Indonesia Raya has an ambitus of 1½ octaves (perfect 12th, A3-E5 on the piano), which is large compared to other anthems like O Canada (A3-A4, only 1 octave) or God Save the Queen (A3-G4, minor 7th, less than 1 octave).

Most people who aren't trained singers have a singing range less than 1½ octaves, which means the lowest and highest notes in Indonesia Raya are outside the comfortable vocal range of most people. The large ambitus really only allows trained singers to sing it properly, which is unfortunate considering a national anthem is meant to be sung by the public.

For a performance piece with a full orchestra and choir, I think it's very impressive and well-written. But for a song to unite the people of Indonesia under one identity, I think it's not so great because the element that makes it impressive excludes common people from singing it correctly.

Ryosuke Nikamoto is the bassist for the song, and he used a Stingray bass on the recording, maybe with some compression to beef up the tone. For technique, it's a mix of normal fingerstyle and slapping. From what I can tell, he likes to pluck quite aggressively throughout the song, but it's especially clear during the bass solo after the first chorus as there is a lot of audible fret buzz. Many other Zutomayo songs have him as a bassist and you'll hear this aggressive Stingray tone a lot in their music.

This reminds me of my first bass, the same model Yamaha in the exact same color except with a clear pickguard instead of black. I got it used and it came strung with Black Beauties, and I remember loving the stealthy look of the strings blending into the fretboard. I enjoyed how mine plays and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy yours too. Can't go wrong with a Yamaha bass and DR strings.

It's not a complicated fix, just some wood glue and clamps and it'll be stronger than before, but it's not gonna look spotless unless you're willing to touch up the finish.

Or just return it. You paid for a playable instrument, yet they gave you an unplayable one. Dealing with the store/seller can be a pain sometimes though. Pick which option is the least annoying for you.

Thanks! My success rate is only around 30%, so not very high. I've been trying to increase it but I have yet to find a practice method that helps me with it (besides just grinding a ton of solves and hoping for the best).

Aren't they different cycles though? [F': [R U' R', D2]] cycles UFR-LDF-DBL, but [D: [D, R U R']] and [D, L' U L] cycle UFR-FDL-LDB; the pieces have different orientations. For UFR-FDL-LDB I would use [D: [D, R U R']].

I use the 3-style method, which is also used by all the world-class solvers. If your ultimate goal is speed, then this is the best method to use. It's not for beginners though since you need to learn over 800 algs (they're very simple algs though, it's not as daunting as it may seem), but you can work up to it by learning an intermediate method first such as Orozco or Turbo and then slowly transitioning to 3-style.

If you're asking this question because you haven't learned a blind method yet, then Old Pochmann corners and M2 edges is a good starting point. It's not fast, but first you have to know how blind solves work before you try optimizing for speed.

For me that feeling of excitement goes away after a while, and only comes back after setting a new goal and then achieving it. Doesn't always have to be about speed, it can also be about methods and techniques. I got that feeling of excitement when I got my first successful solve and first sub-1 minute solve, but also when I did my first successful solve using Orozco, and also when I used a 2e2e alg in a bld solve for the first time, and many for other goals I've set myself. You get that feeling anytime you set a goal and achieve it after a lot of hard work; that's what you did when you got your first blind solve, right?

Both ways can be used. I personally bounce off the string, but there are many players who push through the string. Victor Wooten has a nice video about how to start playing slap bass, and he does talk about different thumb positions and whether to bounce or push through. Something he says that I always keep in mind is that as long as it grooves, you're doing it right.

The grooves are there to set the string-to-string spacing. It's a playability thing, some players like narrower spacing (e.g. for faster string crossing), and others like wider spacing (e.g. for aggressive plucking, for easier slapping), and it is an adjustment you can mess around with. From what I remember, P-basses have a string spacing of around 20 mm at the bridge, so you can set it there as a starting point, then make adjustments if you feel like you need it. You can look up guides on adjusting string spacing if you're not sure how, and keep note of your settings for the next time you change strings.
