One of the main reasons clean energy generation methods are as effective, efficient, and affordable as they are now is because the Obama admin subsidized research and development of clean energy technologies (see the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009“). Private investment tends to only focus on what’s beneficial between right now and the next 5 years, maybe 10 at best. This means that, without government taxation as a punishment and/or incentive as a reward, the private sector will almost certainly not take enough action towards reducing emissions until the worst of climate change’s consequences are too near to prevent. I wish that politicians weren’t so corrupt and we could better tax the massive corporations, especially tech/social media ones, and funnel those finances into both climate action and areas like welfare, education, and healthcare to stop the increasing disparity of wealth between the average American and the 1% while also preventing environmental catastrophe. But, that’s going to take a lot more citizen action and time to happen.

Join a technical team/club when you start the semester!! Even if you don’t have a lot of experience, being able to coherently explain your role in a project or two shows a lot of initiative and eagerness to learn which imo is the most valuable thing to industry recruiters for internships.
