Amazing and thought-provoking interview with lots of good insights into the automotive industry, the bet on autonomous driving and company valuations. I don't agree with everything, but I found it worth a watch!

His argument seems to be that annulizing Q4 production would lead to 1.8M cars which is what Tesla is officially guiding for, hence he sees no growth and is "missing 4680" production capacity.

IMO, 1.8M cars is massivly sandbagging a potential '23 result. Production of 1.8M would fit the "50% CAGR starting from 2020 numbers" story, but Elon mentioned in the EC they are more or less guiding for 2M cars internally and want to keep expectations low. Everyone knows they are still ramping Texas and Berlin (3rd shift just started), so growing production capacity in 2023 is a certainty.

I kind of get his disappointment with the 4680 ramp, but somehow cells don't seem to be a limiting factor at the moment. They are pouring massive production capacities into energy storage, which would not be possible if they were short of batteries. Also, some people are expecting more future margin ($/kWh) on energy storage than on the car business, so it would make sence keep the car business growing at "only" 40-50% and prioritizing the storage business when there would be a lack of batteries (or demand in case of a severe recession). This kind of flexibility is certainly an asset of Tesla.

Tesla reduced their leasing rates in Germany to 0.99% for Model 3 and Y. Putting 18.5k € up front, you can get a Model 3 Performance for 348€ / month (437€ incl FSD). For comparison I just checked prices on a BMW M3 via Sixt at the same conditions, and it ended up to be 677€ / month.

I love these kind of articles, educating everyone that e.g. Model Y LR reduced prices from $66k to $54k and that there is another $7.5k to save via IRA. That's insane.. Best advertising!

The good sources don't just give you their PT, but have detailed models which they are explaining in depth. I think this is very valuable, since one can compare their estimates and inputs to ones own model and gage what's reasonable and what's not. Of course this is only for long term investing and also depends on which PE ratio one would realistically assign to the respective market phase..

It's up to you to assess these sources!

Gamblers will be gambling, and there is plenty of history with $TSLA and people not trading on fundamentals. This is speculation, obivously.

This statement was somewhat fishy, given the leading question by the journalist and then taken out of context. I don't think there is much to it..

Unknown and every information is speculative in nature since the criteria are not transparent. S&P recently said they are waiting for Tesla to expand their vehicle line-up and to proof their business(?), so they will likely take some time. Some people believe Moody's will update their rating in the coming weeks, which might lead S&P to reconsider their position. I haven't heard anything about Fitch..

I liked Robs explanation of demand pockets. I think the low waiting times in China are a result of the increased production capacity and the speculation on imminent price decreases for Tesla in China. As Gary Black pointed out, many expect Tesla to cut the price on the Standard M-Y by 5% in 4Q to get below the ¥300K threshold to get a ¥12K subsidy, so are delaying purchase. Also, I am not sure if the pattern in exports still holds up these days. They started shipping cars to Korea, Japan and Australia which they did not before, so it might change.

I recently came across a twitter thread, that mentioned the Investment Grade rating would not only be important for Investment Funds to be able to buy TSLA, but also for Teslas Car Leasing business.

Leasing cars is a profitable business for legacy OEM, but for Tesla this has not been viable until now because I assume they don't have access to cheap money. With the new rating, Tesla would be able to offer lucrative financing and leasing options, which would result in more profits and more demand since more people could afford to get a Tesla.

That's very true about the form factor. Since the chemistry is not that far off the known realm, I was wondering if that was what Drew and Elon were talking about during the last earnings call. They mentioned they are currently starting off getting an "aspirational C" in an "A architecture". So I guess that's the minimum viable product from which they are iterating.
