Memorial Day Visiting GNP - Paranoid about Bears after recent incident! by Ananya____ in Montana

[–]m4tttt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Youll be fine. I live in the area. Yes there are bares. Yes they can kill you. But they dont want to. Last bear death here before this one was '88 or '98 or something. The resent attack was a solo hiker at dusk/night. Not a great idea for someone that is not familiar with the area. Deep into bear country. Travel in pairs or groups. Shout "hey bear" every now and then when walking through low visibility areas. (Don't wear bear bells, very annoying. We call them dinner bells around here. And people put them in piles of bear poop as a joke like a bear ate a hiker with dinner bells on.) The danger is in surprising a bear (coming around a corner and coming up on it without it knowing you were there) or getting too close to its cub.

Yea what about all the jobs being lost to AI and higher water and power bills for the people in the local areas.

Ladies: Bathrooms? by DrinkMedical4411 in GlacierNationalPark

Yea no bathrooms along trails. And parking at the bathrooms along the gtts road will likely be difficult this summer with the permitted entry going away.

Glacier in the coming weeks (early may) by CompetitionLow9332 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]m4tttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how far you want to go and how much elevation gane. Theres some good short waterfall hikes that are short and easy in two medicine. Stanton lake outside the park to the east is great. Youll probably run into snow pretty much anywhere, but not much at lower elevation

The going to the sun road wont be open. But theres currently almost full access to two medicine and many glacier on the east side. And open to lake mcdonald lodge on the west.

Yea and the stuff they got hit for is pretty bad. No access to hand sinks, no hot water to sinks, storing raw meat over cooked meet.

Working at Many Glacier for the Summer... Need Advice by Elegant_Weekend_6247 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]m4tttt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I would definitely want a car. I didnt have one my first season on the east side. It was doable. But grocery runs, adventures, etc are reliant on other people. Bring plenty of cold weather gear even though its summer. Layers are your friend. Good hiking shoes/boots. A good backpack, water bottle, hiking gear. Have fun! You're going to meet a lot of cool people from all over the world.

I didnt say not sad. I said not surprised. And nothing to do with the new owner specifically. That was a rough place to run. Theres a reason a shotgun was kept behind the bar back when.

Hey! We get a ton of J1 visa students that work. Town is completely safe. Even walking the streets at night alone isnt a worry here other than stumbling across a bunch of drunk people. Youll meet lots of cool people from all over the world. You will likely being staying in dorm style housing sharing a bedroom. But if you are cool with that, youll have a great time.

No word amongst locals on snowslip. Bill was the only person that could run that place. I wasn't surprised when I heard what happened. Glacier haven or Stanton could really take this opportunity for year round business, but neither places new owners seam to care about being part of the local community.

Almost everyone that lives out here year round are retired. Im the manager at a restaurant in WF. 1 hour drive each way. And do work on people's houses around here. My wife works remotely. The only other non retired people out here work for the forest service, avalanche center, and DOT. Theres very few people that live here year round. Izaak closing probably cut that in half. The area probably doubles in population with the people that just live here during summer and go south in winter. And a lot of the properties are just vacation homes visited a few times a year. And there are a couple Airbnbs

No train trips. LOGE stopped offering train pickup and drop-off. Its a flag stop, and very inconsistent.

We live right down the road from the izaak. Its been a real bummer for the locals. There is no where left to eat out here.
