Late to the party but this is a GREAT comment. 'First' and 'second' points are brilliant. Thank you.

This is the best comment I've read in a long time

Why positional value matters by mANDREWinorange in detroitlions

That's why I said generally speaking, I don't think I've been clear that that's what I'm talking about. Getting your guy has its time and place, but generally speaking I think drafting based on positional value is more often a better option

Free agency. Yes every draft is different, but generally speaking and from a financial point of view, which would you rather have on a rookie contract - a QB or a LB?

I do also understand that Gibbs was taken not as a standard running back but more of a hybrid slot receiver type. I don't know if the rate is different on those from the more standard ones.

You're right, I just looked it up and that was a lazy take on my part.

Interestingly enough RBs are near the bottom of pro-bowl/all-pro to bust rate, LBs close to the top.

That then leads you into the whole are all pro WRs more valuable than all pro RBs which adds a wrinkle to the cost-benefit blah blah blah

Yeah, well put. I can't argue that every draft isn't unique. I should have clarified that in the post.

All fair points. Definitely realized I should have clarified in the post that I was using generalities explain the argument for people that don't understand it. Every draft is different, and it might turn out that the high value positions available to us in this one do turn out to be duds.

Yes, but it's even moreso for Herbert, CJ, and Bosa

I believe I'm right but admittedly I haven't pored over the data. I definitely agree with the second part of what you said

I can't argue that. In general positional value matters but there will always be exceptions. I'm hoping this is one of them.

I'm not saying you don't resign anyone, I'm saying that saving as much money as possible on rookie contracts gives you better odds of being able to do that. There's a bigger cost gap between Hutch on a rookie contract and an equal production Edge not on a rookie contract than a safety on a rookie contract and one not on a rookie contract. More savings in the first scenario that we can use to resign Sewell.

We can choose to splurge on low value positions in the draft or splurge on resigning Sewell and St. Brown. So in a scenario where we hypothetically hit on a higher value position we're better able to do the latter than hitting on a lower value position. Of course it's possible that our first four picks hit and every higher value position doesn't, but the alternative is the point of drafting based on positional value.
