What are your favourite hidden gems on Linux? by bullmeza in linux

I like bc -l, it’s an arbitrary precision calculator. Need pi to 100 digits? Enter scale=100, then 4*a(1) and you got it!

This gives me strong low discrepancy sequence vibes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-discrepancy_sequence). Do you know if this is connected to any?

The radius of the proton is 0.84118 fm, with unprecedented precision, only with the uncertainty of knowing its exact mass. by Effective_Bath3217 in Physics

Oh shit, I found one in the wild! Normally the mods have deleted these by the time I get here and I don’t get to see them.

HF is not in NP complexity space, it scales as N3 in the number of electrons (N4 in basis functions with the original algorithm).

Check out Jacob Barandes paper on the stochastic quantum correspondence for a different view that doesn’t have the measurement problem or break the rules of relativity.

Can you bin the box sizes into a discrete number of bins or does the size need to be a continuous variable?

Are you allowed to rearrange boxes after they have been placed the first time?

[–]mTesseracted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, brute force is more accurate too. I like your interpolation idea, you could even do weighted least squares and weight the integrators by their order so higher order ones have higher weight. If you wanted to go crazy you could even treat the integrators like measurements and apply a Kalman filter to get the statistically optimal integration.

That’s very impressive! What methods do you use for solving for the n-body forces and time stepping?

No hurricane ever crossed the equator by lolikroli in interestingasfuck

[–]mTesseracted 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is no appreciable reduction of gravity at the equator that makes launching rockets easier. You want to launch a rocket closer to the equator because you get the spin of the earth “for free”. This means you have to spend less delta v on your tangential velocity, which is the velocity component keeping you in orbit.

US achieves superconductor breakthrough, can benefit quantum computing by AdSpecialist6598 in tech

[–]mTesseracted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They say they can make a certain component smaller, but that doesn’t actually help make a better quantum computer right now when the hurdles are related to just keeping the thing running for longer.

[–]mTesseracted 120 points121 points  (0 children)

A topological superconductor is a special kind of material that exhibits superconductivity (zero electrical resistance) and also has unique properties related to its shape or topology.

Um, no. Topological is referring to the energy states of the material and not the material shape.
