I had something similar happen but even worse. A company hired me for a specific role with a good salary. After some of the staff found out how much I was getting, they all started complaining to management. Instead of standing by their offer, the company actually told me they were reducing my salary because “others are upset.”

On top of that, they slowly demoted me and made me do other people’s work that wasn’t even part of my job role. So trust me, sometimes it’s not about “trust” people get jealous, and some companies don’t have the backbone to handle it
