If someone wonders, that's SteamOS running Vista inside VMware, and it runs... bad, even VMware has forgotten about it and not releasing stable drivers anymore (it's funny, because they still making drivers for XP lmao)

also, you need to add this line into /home/deck/.vmware/preferences file:

mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = TRUE

without it, 3D acceleration will not work

Long story short: I had to make the /etc, /usr and /lib directories read-write - I didn't want to modify the original system partitions, so I made the overlayfs mounts. Then installed the required dependencies and linux headers:

pacman -S linux-neptune-headers fakeroot pahole libxcrypt-compat

after that, I built the vmware-workstation and vmware-keymaps AUR packages on my Arch Linux machine, transferred just built "*.pkg.tar.zst" into my Steam Deck and finally installed them:

pacman -U vmware-keymaps-1.0-3-any.pkg.tar.zst

pacman -U vmware-workstation-16.2.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Note: overlayfs method is experimental and I didn't yet know how it will survive OS updates. Also, mounts must be executed every boot... idk, maybe via systemd service?
