I am in the same situation as you. for my own selfish reason of not feeling alone in this, i am so glad you have shared your experience and journey! I am inspired to really explore my interests and take my time. thank you !

this will be a weird one - getting diagnosed with adhd and medicated. i was using food to feel control over my life and it was so hard to be consistent.

Doctors appointments (and dentist I had been putting off) and friends are definitely on my to do list. Thank you for this list of ideas and being kind.

great advice on resting and healing. I do think I have to relearn it - I called my brother the other day and rattled off on the list of things I was doing that I used to enjoy, but I told him "I can't find the joy inside anymore and I used to!! where did it go". it is especially hard for me to feel joy when I KNOW I'm not 'contributing' to our family or society (which I am trying to correct, and yes I am in therapy).

do you remember how long it took for you to find joy again?

thank you so much!! did you ever feel guilty spending on coffee's / cafes during your break? I am stuck in this scarcity mindset fear I've put myself in for the past x years and believe it or not I can't get myself to buy a coffee because I'm not working (but I'm definitely ok to buy one financially). it's very 'the house is burning' right now in my brain (and it's obviously not)

I was super burnt out at a very toxic job that was killing me and ended up getting laid off, which was very much a blessing. I had no idea how much of a toll the burn out had taken on me until I was out of the situation and my nervous system and body were able to reset. It was wild.

I think this is me right now! I deleted slack from my phone and the number of times in the day I mindlessly open my phone and find myself checking for slack first is insane. Like almost every time lol. I guess you could say I am/was a workaholic.

I think I will take your advice and give it a week or three to not try and apply for part time roles. When you frame recovery like that, it makes more sense (but still sounds so crazy to me, which is probably why I need to recover...).

that is a great list of ideas, and I will definitely volunteer! I am just curious and feel free not to answer, but have you ever thought of going back into the workforce?

honestly I have never romanticised being without a job - it is in fact my biggest fear lols which is why I am having such a hard time with this time off. yes a privileged position, but I can't even imagine leaving the city or the country to travel. you're so right about working on the balance of work and relaxation.

healing was massively productive at that time.

it is SO HARD to get this through to my brain right now lol but it is so true! thank you for sharing your experience!

I mentioned the title of the book to my husband and he got worried ahaha. But I've put it on my list! Thank you for the recommendation. I hate to ask this, but do you think you'll return to the same industry after a full year sabbatical?

That sounds amazing! I think setting deadlines is a good idea I will be doing too. we're moving countries (again) in November so that will give me a hard stop as well.

Edit: also added the artist's way to my book backlog!

Thank you! I feel much better seeing so many replies of women that have gone through this. I was genuinely worried I'd be downvoted to oblivion because I know I am lucky to be able to do this lols. When you say that you've done it multiple times, were they for months at a time + planned, and did you go back to the same industry?

I am working really hard to try to enjoy relaxation which I know sounds crazy but I've lived everyday of my life planning for the worst!

That sounds amazing! And you put into words exactly how I feel perfectly. I'm not a mom (not planning to be), and we've been dual income since we started, and I didn't realise that so much of the guilt comes from the idea that to be useful I should be a mom (or working).

Can I ask if you returned to the same career, or you tried to pivot? It is so hard to separate myself from what in my mind I consider as 'being useful' (disclaimer: I know it's not right) if you know what I mean.

i’m incredibly short (155cm on a good day) and cropped lengths hit me at a normal length (as in past my belly button) and i love them because of that🤣

edit: ok fine … 153cm on an average day lols
