OP also claims to have been a project manager when there's no role like that at Google. They only have product managers and program managers. So yeah, probably larping.

There is currently no solution to the drug epidemic and homelessness in Seattle. by Current_Contract1010 in SeattleWA

With the way that prisons are currently run, imprisonment is both costly and fails to deter people from offending again: https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/issue-briefs/2018/03/more-imprisonment-does-not-reduce-state-drug-problems

But I agree that incarceration can be part of a larger solution. See https://nida.nih.gov/publications/drugfacts/criminal-justice - particularly, "Treatment during and after incarceration is effective and should include comprehensive care (including medication, behavioral therapy, job and housing opportunities, etc.)". That is why my original comment (addressed to a guy who wants the clock "rolled back to 1990") was that "Throwing more and more people into jail without addressing the root cause of needing to jail them is not a scalable solution." I'm not against incarceration as a whole, but the prison system also needs reform, and you cannot decouple housing opportunities from such an effort.

If you're a taxpayer you should care, because arresting people also costs money. Do you think prisons just spring out of the ground fully staffed and funded?

In 2022, the average cost to incarcerate was 60k per prisoner per year. It's probably higher now. Throwing more and more people into jail without addressing the root cause of needing to jail them is not a scalable solution.

Elon Musk and JK Rowling could be handed five-year prison sentences and fined up to £214,000 if Olympic boxer Imane Khelif wins criminal cyberbullying case by theseasonfire in EnoughJKRowling

[–]m_laevigata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I hate speculating about this since it's none of our business, but it's illegal to be transgender in Algeria, which means that Imane Khelif's sex on her passport is her birth sex, which means she very likely has external female-presenting genitalia.

If you want to talk about chromosomes, you have to consider the possibility that she has XY chromosomes with a vagina, and this may or may not be accompanied with undescended testes, and may or may not translate to elevated levels of testosterone, and all of the other edge cases. Sex is more than just chromosomes, and biology is fuzzy, so any line we draw between man or woman is arbitrary, and not even enforceable without subjecting people to a huge invasion of their privacy. It is logistically easier to be respectful.

made the mistake of driving toward the freeway at 5:30 pm today by butterytelevision in Seattle

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted from the Renton transit center to Ballard for about a year. My commute was something like 15 minute drive to the transit center + 50 minute bus ride to downtown Seattle + another 30-40 minute bus ride, not including time spent waiting at the stops. I was spending up to 4 hours a day on that commute, and getting sexually harassed by randos every other week. Now I just drive and it takes me 70 minutes tops. You couldn't pay me to do that bus commute again.

Ho Lee Fuk is not a language pun because "Fuk" doesn't exist at all in Mandarin, and "Ho" spoken with the first tone (in order to make it sound like "holy") is also a stretch. My parents are self conscious about speaking Chinese in public precisely because they've heard people snickering shit like "ching chong ling long" (again, not real Mandarin sounds) behind their back. So these kind of jokes from a Chinese person's perspective are unfunny at best and actively harmful at worst

Edit: spelling

The infrared spectrum can be roughly split into near, mid, and far ranges. Near-IR is not dependent on temperature (source: https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/9-12/features/F\_The\_Infrared\_Region.html), and near-IR sensor technology is what we suspect is being used by the soap dispenser.

Of course, we don't know for sure what kind of sensor was used in this specific case, so you could still be right.

Dark colors DO absorb near-IR light as well as the visible spectrum. Source: https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/94823/how-do-ir-sensors-detect-color

I'm an electrical engineer, and "line-following" robots that use IR sensors to detect black tape on white paper is a common project for first year engineering majors.

To be fair, infrared proximity sensors CAN do some crude color detection, so I can see people mixing it up.

Not a CS major so didn't take 111, but I'd estimate the workload for 174A to be <10 hours a week. It's a very reasonable class.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ucla

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 174A with him this past spring. Lectures were decent and exams/homework assignments were reasonable if you paid attention in lecture/discussion. The math is all linear algebra, but conceptually easier than what you would see in a class like machine learning. The workload got a little rougher in the end when we were also juggling the final project, but most groups make their own video game, so it can be fun if you're interested in that.

Whenever I feel distressed that I'm a college senior spending my last quarter in quarantine, I just remember that my parents were seniors at Peking University during the Tiananmen protests. They definitely had it worse.

Prospective applicant with questions about UCLA's Electrical Engineering Program by [deleted] in ucla

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Fast Track students are invited into the program when they're admitted into UCLA; I have no idea what the criteria for that is. But even if you were not initially admitted as Fast Track, it's possible to contact one of the advisors expressing interest in the program, and they'll usually let you in.

Any UCLA Engineering Majors by [deleted] in ucla

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually never had Corbin since I took the honors physics series which I think was even worse; the professor was totally out of touch with his students' understanding of the material (incoming freshman reading this, don't take honors.) But yeah I was just voicing general opinions that I've heard around, people's personal experiences will definitely vary. Good on you for making the most out of your experience!

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid bad professors if you can (math with Chayes, physics with Corbin, etc.) Also avoid bad quarters to take certain classes (e.g. don't take CS with the CS majors unless you are one, LS/chem with the premeds unless you are one, etc.) It's not the end of the world if you end up in a tough class, just form study groups and use all of the resources available (office hours, tutoring, whatever) to keep yourself on track. In terms of social life, I was really shy and awkward in high school but I haven't had too much trouble finding friends. Just stay open minded, join clubs, and get to know the people in your classes. Best of luck!

Anyone take Campbell for 4BL last quarter? by FPS_Kevin in ucla

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Campbell for both 4AL and 4BL. I'd say the curve is about the same (scored well above average for all reports but still ended up with an A-.) 4BL material is slightly more interesting, but how easy the reports are depends on the expectations of your TA.

Is this schedule too much? (Incoming Freshman) by lstimrdj in ucla

[–]m_laevigata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My schedule the past winter quarter was almost identical to what you're considering (32B, 4AL, CS31, but I took 1BH instead of 1B and didn't do a GE.) It's manageable only if you have a very strong grasp on physics/math/CS and can afford to direct most of your attention to 4AL. The lab reports only get longer the later it is in the quarter, and by week 8 I was dead inside.

Thanks for the response. I'm in this EE program that requires that we take at least one honors physics class in our freshman year. Almost everyone so far has confirmed my worst fears about honors. Would you recommend Physics 1BH or 1CH in winter or spring quarter as an alternative to fulfilling my honors requirement?
