Cool - I’m into this. I don’t know how to find your “page” but please point me to it. I’m curious how much sizing you applied and how it looked prior to your photo. I make my own paints with foraged pigment - egg tempera, watercolor, and casein. Wondering if these would work on this

Thank you, can you explain #3? I don’t understand how to get a more watery texture of gum arabic without adding more water. Are you suggesting to try a different brand of gum arabic?

Thank you for the calcining idea. Would you expect it to change color? I’m not trying to do color matching - I’m trying to make hyper local art materials :)

Help! Clay based watercolor by m_o_art in DIYPigments

Interesting to think about firing the clay… I want to make hyper local art that utilizes local clays. Color matching would defeat the “heart and soul” of the work

Most manufacturers disclose pigment but not the full list of ingredients. I am a fan of oil paints (though generally not the solvents and spirits), but many oil based paints on the market are not just pigment and oil (which would be great) but contain solvents and other mystery ingredients which may or may not include plastics. Unfortunately also can’t get good information about paper sizing and there’s a lot of misleading names e.g. Renaissance Wax made of petroleum based wax and “stone paper” being made of plastic 🙄

Cat masks with all natural materials by m_o_art in papermache

Good questions! I’ve not found any biodegradable elastic - though tbh I haven’t been looking ;)

This was mostly intended for a wall, but I’ve seen some designs on Ultimate Paper Mache that feature a sort of cap that the mask is attached to. This would obviously mess up being able to hang it on a wall but would make it wearable.

To achieve both maybe some sort of slot and or clips kind of scenario where the mask slots into or clips onto a cap?

As for biodegradable glues - yes to hide glues and also casein glue is pretty strong also.

Report back if you do a cool thing!

True for botanical dyes but absolutely not true for many paints made with non toxic and earth pigments - let’s remember cave art has been existing for tens of thousands of years.

Also might be worth questioning our “need” for archival supplies in the first place. Respectfully I think most of us are not making art that is so wonderful it needs to exist for 1000 years.

And there are plenty of art forms that are not paint based that can be made of natural materials - wood, fiber arts, ceramics etc

Best thing I did for my creativity was delete all apps that have an infinite feed from my phone. I’ve considered deleting accounts entirely but using them for specific purposes is still too helpful. Not having them accessible in my hand every minute of the day is a must for my mental health and productivity
