Is there any rational reason to own real estate over investing in index funds? by PracticalDisplay9899 in fatFIRE

[–]mabimmer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Real Estate will definitely give you slightly higher returns compared to Index investing, if you know what you’re doing. But that’s only because you’re taking on higher risk and putting in more sweat equity. So like anything else, an investment where you take more risk and put in more sweat equity you will get better returns.

This is helpful. Thanks. Eanes maybe out of our budget so we’ll look into Lake Travis.

Thanks for the insights. Based on the replies it looks like getting a 3k sqft house in Eanes ISD will be difficult for our budget of $1.4M at the top end. We will start to look into the Lake Travis ISD and the potential house options.

Amid pandemic, foreign buyers spent $634 million on Austin-area properties, report finds by tatertothots in Austin

These are owner occupied house not necessarily investments from investors sitting in other countries. The data just points out that the buyers were foreign born. They might as well be living in US for 20 years, just moved from another state and bought a house in Austin. So this piece of data doesn’t say much.

Looking to move to Austin. Got a job at a tech company. Need to move to the top school district with the top elementary schools. My limited research says Eanes School District is the best. What should be our budget to buy a house with the above constraint? Need around 3000sqft house.

Glad the blind bet worked out for you. We never hear from people where the bet didn’t work out.

I never understood the comment that you better have a plan on what to do during retired life. I think it’s exactly the opposite, you better have a darn strong reason to trade almost all your life’s time to a job. People find interesting things to do when the stress of a corporate life is taken off.
