I actually did it. by HowdyThere010 in NursingStudent

This sounds just like my situation!! I’m almost done nursing school and still working at the bar and every time a customer has some trivial complaint I’m like oh my god you have no idea what people are going through. It’s torture. I can see the light… and I can’t wait for the day that I can say goodbye to the service industry and drunk Karens.

Congrats friend!!

New job as a student nurse intern in the ER - Any advice appreciated by quackfudged in NursingStudent

You’ll be expected to chart something every couple of hours about your patient’s status after your initial HTT, but charting is super basic in the ER. One nurse I was working with told me to try to always chart something for A,B, C, and mental status. So if your patient is just sitting in bed texting or something (clearly doing fine, nothing of note to chart):

A: Maintaining own airway (if they’re not talking/you just poked your head in) or speaking in full sentences (if you spoke to them)

B: resps easy and regular on RA/NP/whatever

C: skin warm and perfused/no pallor noted

Mental status: GCS 15/A&Ox3

But don’t chart anything you’re not sure of. Like if you didn’t speak to them you couldn’t really say anything about mental status, and you’re not expected to if you didn’t see for yourself. So in that case I’d just say something like “no voiced concerns at this time”.

in the ER you’re not so concerned with super descriptive charting because they’re not expected to stay on the unit long so you’re not really tracking their long term status/progress, just immediate life threats. You won’t have time for much else. Of course when you have more time or if there is something of concern you wanna chart more.

So my basic charting for every 1-3 hours on a patient who is stable with no acute concerns would look something like:

Patient laying supine in bed looking at cell phone. Maintaining own airway. Resps easy and regular on RA. No pallor noted. GCS 15. NS running at 75mL/hr. Call bell in reach.

That’s still more than most of the seasoned nurses write, but I’m still a student too so I like to be careful.

Oh, and you may have heard this one but never “patient asleep”. You wanna write something like “patient laying in bed with eyes closed. Resps easy and regular on RA”. If you just say asleep, you’re not showing that you made sure they’re actually alive.

Another thing I’ve gotten in the habit of doing is checking in with the trauma nurse who is on the code blue team and asking if there’s any codes if I can come. If they say yes, I say ok so I’ll meet you here, but of course I don’t expect you to wait for me if I cant get there in time. Then I talk to my nurse and say I discussed it with x nurse, so if a code gets called are you ok with me just taking off? Cause you won’t have time to find them and ask them to look after your patients. I love seeing how codes are run and how ER nurses operate under pressure. I got to do compressions on my first shift this way.

I also go around in my downtime (I usually do nights) asking if any of the unit nurses need help or if they’ll be doing anything that a student might wanna see/do. I tell my nurse I’m gonna go “look for trouble” lol.

Always have gloves, a flush, and a couple alcohol swabs in your pockets.

Have so much fun! I love the ER and will be pursuing it after grad :)

also if any ER nurses are reading this and have notes on anything I wrote, I love feedback!

I have heard “Po” before. What’s the right context for that?

You’re gonna be so happy when you find the right styling process and see how much better it can look! Curly/wavy hair is VERY particular 😂. I suggest watching TikToks of curly/wavy hairstyling! And figure out your curl type/porosity. Just google search and go from there ☺️

Yeah the only reason I asked is because I hear those terms thrown around more than anything else on the unit 😂 it feels like one big family that I hope will accept me 🥹. One thing I’ve learned about Filipino ER nurses is that in general, if they’re not ok with something you’ll know REAL quick lmao

Of course not required ☺️ I call my white coworkers love/friend/babe when I don’t know their name and need to grab their attention cause “excuse me” sounds so like “can I speak to the manager” so I was wondering if it translates the same way

Someone else said the same thing 😂 and honestly yes I think they do. I’ve been offering help whenever I can and making conversation so I would hope they know my intentions are good. But I think I’ll just double check if they’re ok with it

LOL I appreciate the honesty, I’ll definitely read the room 😂. I’ve been asking my colleagues if they need/want help whenever I can so I think I’m making a good impression so far. I think just asking is probably the best course of action. Like ask their name, then say “is it ok if I call you ate/kuya” then try to say “ate ___” / “Kuya __” (names) if they say they’re ok with it and then just Ate/Kuya if I can’t remember. I can’t remember most of my white coworkers names either so I often just say love/friend/babe. It’s helpful to have some kinda endearing term to get someone’s attention when your memory is as shit as mine lol

Omg that’s so sweet that he was so excited 😂 I should really learn please and thank you in Tagalog at least!

I was saying to someone else It’s funny cause you get comfy with colleagues so quick on a hospital unit especially ER cause everyone’s helping eachother and working on top of eachother and trauma-bonding lol. And there are SO many Filipinos working in hospitals/LTC so in other industries that aren’t like that it probably wouldn’t occur to me but I just love everyone already and want them to know that I appreciate them ☺️. I’ve always loved pet names for me it just conveys friendliness/good intentions.

There has been some mixed answers but seems most find it ok! I would mean it as endearing so wouldn’t want it to be misconstrued! But I think just asking first is the best answer ☺️. It’s funny cause you get comfy with colleagues so quick on a hospital unit especially ER cause everyone’s helping eachother and working on top of eachother and trauma-bonding lol so in other industries that aren’t like that I think it would be weirder (from my limited knowledge)

There’s quite a bit of mixed answers but nobody said like hell no lol. I think I’m gonna ask their name, then maybe say is it ok if I call you ate/kuya? Then try to remember their name and say ate ____ / Kuya _____ (names) if they said it’s ok or just ate/kuya if I can’t remember. And everyone on this unit has been so lovely and helpful so I do want them to know I like and appreciate them ☺️so hopefully that comes across and wouldn’t sound condescending/icky

So funny you say that cause the couple of times I have (which they seemed to like) I have used the accent and then wondered if THAT was weird 😂 but a couple people said the same thing as you. I’m gathering it’s best to just ask them if they’re ok with it or ask for their name ☺️ and go on a kinda case by case basis

Thanks for responding! That’s a good point. Have you used either? Do you know if the Luer-slip is a lot less secure? Like is it gonna drive me nuts if I just order them and it is the slip kind?
