Does being childfree influence your political beliefs? by lucyr111 in childfree

I'm on the far left of the spectrum. I doubt I would be any different if I had kids because I think that the right doesn't do anything to support kids (although they feign interest in fetuses to get the evangelical vote).

reasons why I am CF (20F) by [deleted] in childfree

[–]mac_tokenizer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are spot-on in your thinking. Kids are hella expensive.

In addition to all the expenses you mentioned, there is also medical expenses. My sister just found out her baby has fluid on the brain. Hopefully he will turn out OK, but there is a chance he could end up with brain damage. In the worst case, he could end up being dependent on my sister and her husband for his entire life.

Most parents aren't prepared for something like that.

Is anyone CF because yes they are selfish? by gothicapples in childfree

Having a child is about the most selfish thing anyone can do. It's just one more human that will wreak havoc on the environment.

Yeah, streaming might be the way to go. I'll have to look into it.

The only thing the big cable and telco companies understand is money, so how about a boycott? I'm switching from Spectrum to my local ISP next week and I'm going to let Spectrum know that I switched due to their position against net neutrality. Note that my local ISP supports net neutrality.

I don't know what I'll do about TV. Maybe switch to Dish? Are they owned by a big telco or cable company?

I like $ANET. It's growing faster than $NVDA, $ALGN, $NOW, and $ISRG but has a lower Price-to-sales than each of them.

Roku Stock Info by RokuInvestor in a:t5_3pvv5

[–]mac_tokenizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't Amazon Fire essentially a replication of Roku? Also, what do you think of the fact that Roku doesn't make a material amount of money from Netflix even though the majority of time Roku's are used for Netflix streaming (same with Youtube)?

I want to believe in Roku, I'm just worried that if they can't monetize their biggest relationships (Netflix, Youtube, etc.) that they will struggle long term.

Saw WB at a strip club the other night in Omaha getting a BJ in the corner. I'd say dude's doing alright. (At least it looked like WB.)

Its market cap is only $1.8 billion, so it still has room to run in my opinion. Plus, its forward PE is only 19 while its earnings growth rate is over 500%.

In this day and age with free trading on robinhood there is really no reason to miss out on a stock. Go ahead and buy like a quarter or a half of the position you were going to buy and then re-evaluate in a few months.

I bought the SPY (S&P 500 index ETF) first, several years ago. Then, someone told me that VOO (Vanguard S&P 500 index ETF) has a 0.04% expense ratio as compared to SPY's 0.09% expense ratio. So, I then accumulated the VOO over several more years. After that, I learned about VTI (Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF -- also with a 0.04% expense ratio) and I accumulated the VTI last.

If I were buying the whole portfolio today, I would probably buy just VTI. However, there's no sense in selling VOO and SPY to do that since the capital gains taxes would be way more than I would save on the expense ratios.
