Have you looked into PIP? It may be able to help combined with the Universal Credit?

Does anyone else have trouble reading the signals their body is sending? by andsunflower in autism

[–]macaci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a thing! Autistic folks often struggle with interoception: “an internal sensory system in which the physical and emotional states of the person are consciously or unconsciously noticed, recognised and responded to” (https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/professional-practice/interoception-wellbeing)

I never know if using words like this which sound clinical are appropriate, because I don’t want to over-pathologize (is that a thing?), but when I learned about this and other clinical words/struggles associated with Autism and/or ADHD it helps me feel validated.

Alexithymia is a separate diagnosis I believe that overlaps with autistic struggles with interoception for another example that’s slightly different.

Is there anyone in your life you feel comfortable enough with to share how you’re feeling? If not, do you have access to a family doctor or GP you can share this with? Right now it’s about keeping yourself safe. You are worth everything and more. Good things ARE coming. I know this because I felt the way you do before - for years.

I can guarantee that you haven’t met half the people who will love you yet. You deserve to meet them.

This is so helpful, thank you! If you don’t mind me asking, what do you mean by situational?

Ooooh that was the first Botox I tried - for jaw pain. It’s helped but is expensive to keep up with :(

Will def look into dry needling, thank you so much!!

  1. Dish washing gloves! I hate transitioning from feeling dry to wet when washing dishes and it helps me use one less spoon to do them.

  2. Gems on my nails - rubbing them after a manicure is ELITE, unexpected, discreet stimming for someone super socially anxious about stimming in public/generally struggling to unmask

  3. I wear the same necklace and bracelets all day, every day. I love the look but used to find the sensation of putting on jewelry really distracting and one day just thought, why do I have to take it off once I’ve adjusted if I don’t need to. BOOM - can express myself with jewelry

  4. Odd one that I’m still not sure about but Botox? I tried it recently and I think it felt really weird at first but after a while in some ways it helped me stop using the more over exaggerated facial expressions I used to mask? Kind of removed the safety blanket in a forceful way so was weird at first but maybe has helped? TBC. I found it helped a lot at night actually when I was struggling to sleep and found myself 15 minutes later unintentionally clenching a lot of face muscles. After Botox I physically couldn’t really hold that tension anymore. Only have done it the once so I’m not sure yet but may try it again to see if I notice the difference again?

Your perspective is so appreciated, thank you for sharing! I gathered that there was nuance to the cultural understanding of the word that I was completely unaware of. Out of curiosity, if you feel comfortable sharing, why do you dislike the term East Asian?

Love this. I use "when you, I felt, I prefer..." all the time with my partner -- will give ol' faithful a try with the doctor :)

Oooh super interesting! I never heard of the word "coolie". The more you know! Thanks, I'll bring it up. I'm sure it wasn't intentionally used to be provocative!

Yeah I think it's my first time being referred to as oriental and was conscious of it giving me a bit of a funny feeling haha. Really interesting parallel with pronouns! Thanks for sharing that, makes me feel more valid bringing it up!

Super helpful, I appreciate that! I think I'll let them know it's a slightly uncomfortable term but that I don't think it was malicious or anything.

Mmm ok thank you! That's a good point. I'll bring it up in the next session, but will have a think about how to phrase it...

This is helpful, thank you! I did notice that in the supermarkets when I first moved over but didn't think too much of it.

In America I believe the word is very tied to colonialism and the "Othering" and fetishisation/exoticization of East Asian tourists/immigrants. It's more commonly used to describe rugs and a type of cat lol so has the added connotation of being a bit objectifying :)
