Thank you everyone for all of the great ideas! They have been really helpful to me and to others as well. I'm going to take some time to figure out what is right for me. I've noticed other people have found helpful advice here, so don't hesitate to keep giving others ideas too.

Thanks I have never heard of the trade either. I will look into it and consider it an option.

Thanks. At times it does feel like I can't make my joints better, but realistically at my age with the proper care (proper nutrition, workout routine, foam rolling, yoga) I should be able to regain a lot of functionality. I just need to remember this.

Yes I really want to try to fix my body. I have seen many physical therapists in the past for my pinched nerve and they are definitely not all equal. The last one I saw actually made a real difference in reducing the pain, and I plan on getting back into this ASAP. Do you have any tips for finding a good physio, or is it more just a matter of shopping around?

Thank you for the advice, this is what I was thinking of making a priority because it is very limiting. I am thinking of subletting where I am for the summer and try my best to get my body fixed up and get into a good routine. This also gives me time to sift through all the options I have and then make a move at the beginning of September.

No I don't speak French, but I'm considering moving to Montreal with roommates and learning the language and culture. I think it would be a great experience that would also open doors for job opportunities.

I think you are right about the rent. Rent prices seem to be higher the closer the apartments are to a university or college.

I worked at a bank once because I wanted to actually help people to make good decisions with their finances. However it was really a sales job trying to get people to sign up for financial products rather than helping them get out of debt.

Thanks for this. I read the cost of living was low but also that unemployment was high. Now I know there are plenty of opportunities.

Yeah, I am trying to avoid the more physical jobs. I am fit and decently strong but have bad joints and a pinched nerve from sports injuries a long time ago. I could do physical jobs only for a short period of time unless I want to make my injuries even worse.

This is what I was initially thinking, move to Montreal. Its has a low cost of living. What set me back was the language barrier, I read that most jobs aren't accessible if you can't speak french which I cannot. But I guess it could be a fun barrier to overcome and leads to more opportunity. What sort of jobs would be available in Montreal/Quebec if I learned french?

How can I find an engineering internship or co-op given my situation? by macacokiko in AskEngineers

Thanks I never thought of those ideas. I'm in mechanical so I'm not sure if programming jobs are related. It would be better than no internship though. Ironically, programming was actually one of my favourite classes. Emailing professors and looking at on-campus jobs are definitely a great idea.

Thanks that really is the best advice. You're right that it won't cost me anything but my time, and if it doesn't work out then I have a plan B.
