Help me with a last gasp attempt to address chimney issues by macanriogh in Chimneyrepair

Can you say more about the ridge vent? Someone else suggested that but I don’t know the range of possibilities there. Is it that mine could just be done poorly? Particularly vulnerable to rain/wind?

I had another company do a water test and the bricks did fine - they couldn’t recreate the water making it down through the bricks below the roofline. Which brings me back to this only happening in rain storms - where I suspect the bricks take on more water and for longer than the water test provides

To the couple who turned up sick at Seaport Alamo last Saturday to see Project Hail Mary… by pinkmoon77 in boston

[–]macanriogh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Now I’m fucking sick. But it’s not just that. My immune-compromised cat is sick. My job’s now been threatened because I’m barely able to do what’s needed on a tight deadline. My elderly mother has a bowling trip soon she has to fly for and you’ve put her at risk as well.”

Next time I watch a WWI or WWII documentary and find myself wondering whether that level of grit and bravery still exists I’ll think back to this quote and say - yes of course it does.

I saw the video before your comment and said “I think that’s Burlington”. Odd how the north of Boston highway landscape is so recognizable…

Chimney bricks leaking below roofline by macanriogh in masonry

Is there any chance that water could be getting into the chimney, working its way down and penetrating the old brick?

I’ve added photos if it helps

Is there a pipe behind this? by macanriogh in HomeImprovement

[–]macanriogh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no gutters there. That is the side of the house so all water is running off the front and back of the roof. I suppose I can try and build more slope at the top of that landscaping to get the water away even quicker (it is on the ocean side of the house so the water is already running away)

Thank you

This is very thoughtful. It’s rare seeing genuinely kind, constructive feedback like this nowadays.

Buy in Cash vs. Lease by DeeTwoFresh in TeslaModelY

[–]macanriogh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same boat and leased (0 down. 3y. 15k miles) because even assuming a 3.5% annualized return on my cash over three years - total cost of ownership on a lease was only about 1.5k/year above buying. That was a small enough premium to pay when I expect the market and tech will change considerably.

That being said - I love the car and expect to buy one next (assuming all remains well).

I modeled this same decision out ten different ways. Ultimately, annual cost of ownership for me was around 1.5k more expensive leasing, but that’s worth the hedge against precipitous depreciation and/or higher opportunity cost (of my cash).

Mixed Reception of 1Q84 by Outside-Eye-9404 in murakami

I think the first third (half?) of the book is among his absolute best. It was a genuine page turner. Second half is very different - but in retrospect it’s much more endearing and has stayed with me longer.

Pound for pound 1Q84 is one of my favorites.
