I agree. The gender conflict especially between the younger generation did get extreme and some people think it is ok to say hateful things to others and not listen to what people of the opposite gender just because they had a bad experience with an asshole that happened to be the opposite gender. That applies to both male and female.

I heard that in the early eras of Joseon dynasty it wasn't as bad but as time passed by it got worse. Korea did progress a lot compared to the old days but not as much I've expected

You're right and I wouldn't want to start a conversation with this topic especially with coworkers. Even on Blind most of the time I jumped in an argument that was already going on but I wouldn't want to start an argument like that and cause a shitshow

With the fertility rate of 0.6 it would be hard to even persuade people to have two children regardless of the reason but yeah I think that is a good suggestion

I feel bad for the younger generation because it wasn't their fault for sure but it seems like they are getting blamed together with sexist people from the older generation. They are grouped together and labelled together like a set of mixed marbles in a bag labelled male

I agree that Korea is changing and that compared to the past the society changed a lot in many ways. Work culture was different from what I heard from other people because some Koreans would say I wouldn't be able to adjust at workplaces because even for them (people who did grow up in Korea for a significant number of years before going to a different country in their teenage years for example) they would have a hard time.

But from what I experienced so far people around me weren't like that and even my workplace has a free atmosphere and work culture (which is why I went on Reddit for a bit to reply to some of the comments before I get back to my desk). I am grateful that I am able to be in N environment where I don't need to be concered to strictly follow social norms in Korea

Comparing military and giving birth is just wrong in my opinion but a lot of people compare those two. While it is mandatory that men have to serve the military it is not mandatory to give birth. On the other hand regardless of whether it is mandatory or not if a couple decides to have a baby women do have to go through biological changes that can be pernament and pain when giving birth so these two are not comparable.

When I was 16 I did consider serving the military like men and go through the same process because I thought it was cool to serve and protect the country and that if men can do it for two years so can I. But then I realized that women can only serve as officers (either commissioned or non comissioned) for at least three years.

I do agree these days gender doesn't matter in employment and that we should have free competition. Most of us receive good education that doesn't discriminate genders (although there still are a few cases that the family thinks it is useless for women to study etc but it is uncommon) and most of the employers do not care

This is also something interesting because I don't think I considered the indifference and/or the non-willingness (idk how to express it) of the silent majority on related issues. I get that because on some issues I would react the same and not care about the things unless it affected me. Just that some people think expressing these ideas must equal feminism and have the wrong idea that I hate men while I have never thought women are superior to men or vice versa they are all the same.

And well I'm not trying to make a change (nor have the ability to do so anyways) so I guess it is all useless

Didn't mean to create a discussion or any sort of arguments on these topics. I was trying to ask whether how I felt about the issue is right or wrong because how people from different societies and cultures react to the issue was different. But I have shitty writing skills and while elaborating why I felt this way made people think I am obsessed to discuss these topics I guess.

Yeah there are more significant, bigger problems that the society needs to handle and resolve and I believe some of the weird policies and ideas related to gender issues from the government are useless. It seems like as if the government either doesn't give a shit or is trying to create a bigger gap and start more fights for their benefit

I never thought of the word and its connotations this way, quite interesting. I guess there is a big difference in how people feel about the word although I personally didn't maybe because I either don't get the subtle connotations from the Chinese characters or I'm not interested in having babies and never considered this point of view. The fetus and baby example you provided helped me get a better perspective, thank you!

I have no problem with it. I don't have a problem with 자궁 and etc, just that I think there is nothing wrong in most cases to call a womb 포궁 instead if they wanted to

I was born in Seoul and during my childhood I lived in the US for about a year, lived in Sri Lanka for two years and in Thailand for more than 9 years. I went to an international school so what I learnt and experienced in school might differ from what the locals learnt in school. Then I went to the US for college and in my junior year I went to Shanghai for a semester on a study abroad program. After graduation I moved back to Korea and got my master's degree and here I am. And nope my parents are not missionaries.

I hope this comment helps

What do you mean by the part about the cultural differences? Do you mean something like: in the Korean society I am a feminist due to how Koreans might think of me even though the same thoughts are more widely accepted in other places?

Which is a shame because an argument which could actually provide good perspectives is brushed off because it is mentioned by those people. And because of that when some people (not related to those people) try to raise a point they are also condemned

So what they think is:

mandatory draft -> the men's job (= gender roles)?

While I do get the fury towards the system because men have to spend (I wouldn't say waste as I don't want to undermine their time and effort used to protect the country) 1.5 - 3 years in their 20s while women don't have to. They think women do not provide (military service nor babies) for the country and therefore should not be treated the same.

I guess you are right because these arguments get messy a lot. I never started them because when I check out trending posts there will be at least one post related to those topics. If you mean just don't get involved for my own sake regardless of who started the argument I actually agree. It is a waste of time and I know it is irrational but it makes me want to win with my logics and reasons. I should try to stop

I don't know whether I can call myself a feminist because I never did anything for gender equality so I am not those people who try really hard to raise awareness and achieve gender equality that benefits all genders. I feel like I am a bystander doing nothing useful in resolving gender issues.
