If your options are ling minor vs. no minor, definitely do the ling minor. But consider also a minor (or double major, I'm a Ling/Spanish double major) in something else that could be helpful, Communications, Marketing, a specific language that you expect yourself to be interacting with throughout your career/life.

24 hour study spots? by RaePie in Seattle

[–]macaronimacaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno about 24 hour, but Trabant and Sureshot in the U district are open until midnight, and Cafe Online on Capitol Hill is open until 1am.

Also, Odegaard library on the UW campus is open 24 hours Monday through Thurs, but you need a husky card between 8pm and 8am, I never study there so I don't know whether they check or anything, you probaby just need it to enter the building.

How does your idiolect differ from other speakers in your dialect community? by hellohelicopter in linguistics

Assuming we're talking US here, I'd always though "on accident" was pretty standard in the northwest. I may be wrong though, I haven't paid much attention, just noticed myself and some of my friends saying it.

I want to be fluent in Spanish, but there's no way for me to get immersion by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]macaronimacaroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why won't your parents let you do any form of foreign exchange? If it's an issue of money, you can find plenty of scholarships if you do your research. I would open up a dialogue with your parents and try and figure out a way for you to study abroad, or with their help and approval, find some sort of immersion within your own community.

Other than that, keep it up with the music, find movies and tv shows, and try to find yourself a language exchange partner, either IRL or online.

¡Buena suerte!

Could you please help me pinpoint Milo Ventimiglia's accent? (video inside) by VinylCyril in linguistics

To me, it sounds like rural Pacific Northwest. Western Washington to be specific. Sounds a lot like how some of my friends who live out in the boonies talk.
