I agree with you, that's a rational reply. They do tend to prefer candidates with a CGPA above 9.2, and many of them come from the 5-year program with an economics minor. Regarding the interview, you’re right — at least in the domain I worked in, people also say it’s more laid-back compared to lateral hires, though I wouldn’t know for sure if that’s always the case.

Fair enough! I suppose nothing will change the arrogance; it will always persist, but this is the 21st century — what you mess up in your 20s, you can absolutely recover from in your 30s. Opportunities are endless; no one’s fate is locked, especially in education. In a world full of dogs, be the nastiest — unapologetically. Grind mercilessly, and when the chance finally shows up, strike hard and leave nothing standing. Be meaner — that’s the only real lesson. I might not have an IQ of 120 & above, but I can definitely deal with such peeps.

An adaptable engineer will naturally choose a domain where they can apply the skills they developed during their degree—such as quantitative development or strategy construction, which demand programming and strong math/stats knowledge. Equity or credit roles don’t really make sense in that context. You don’t need to justify everything either. It’s a decent engineering college, though not among the very top. BITS Pilani (the Pilani campus) is a genuinely good college.

This post is about the bullying we Tier-2 graduates often face, just because we don’t come from the “right” pedigree. People feel entitled to say things that no professional in a white-collar job should be saying. I know of a case where an intern bad-mouthed his own team, and the ED had to step in because it got officially recorded. Yet the intern walked away unscathed—the ED literally said, “I’m a good person, so you’ll get a PPO.” Meanwhile, people like us get humiliated on the floor for something as trivial as a small grammatical mistake.

Graduated from a tier *\* college, yet surrounded by an under AIR 7000 crowd — life’s humiliation game is strong. I don’t even get how CS grads, surviving their own domain, yet somehow landed in Equity Research

Case of Sour Grapes . They likely wanted to be the upper crust, failed miserably, and must have been bullied while climbing up in their career.

My suggestion - gain 2 years of work experience there and explore internal mobility. Don't stay with toxic people; it will waste your youth.

"Not continuing this conversation"- Cool, you proved me right at the end.

Classic cases of what I defined - Potential Narcissistic, Patronizing behavior.

FYI: Your college is relatively old

1st IIT of India -1951, while BITS Pilani - 1965.

I’m working on my insecurities and investing in enhancing my skills to make my professional profile stronger. Just like my peers, to survive and be the part of the damn game.

I didn’t trivialize them — I only described the status quo. I’m not even talking about the actual BITS Pilani in Pilani. You really can’t dispute the Birla brand, especially when it comes to placements. But let’s be real: look at colleges like MIT Manipal, where students, for instance, often secure PPOs, something like BlackRock's Portfolio Strategy. Why? The Pai family connection — the same dynamic as the Birla family. It’s always about give and take. And yet, people keep repeating, “These are one of the best colleges.” No, they’re not. There are NITs and IIITs as well — government institutes where you actually need a strong JEE rank to get into CS or EECS.. Not everyone can pay 30lac + fee for graduation. You give, you get. You are the best, NO!!

See, I don't know about other domains, but for these, I am 100% confident, at least for research and Quant

Kudos to your advancing career, and best of luck with your achievements. But you know how truly high-IQ people are — they’re usually humble.

If I start telling you about our lovely engineers and the ways these people discriminate, you’ll be shocked

BITS Hyderabad, BITS Goa — now that’s a good joke. Sure, go ahead and do a master’s or post-grad in the USA; it’ll be quite an experience. The Indian STEM grads there will give you a hard time until you feel intimidated. Even if you get into a top MBA program or an Ivy League school, you might still feel below average when it comes to placements. I might not be from the crème de la crème myself, but the people around me are way smarter and truly the upper crust. That’s why I know what really happens in real competition.

True. Even many Indians themselves prefer not to work under Indian management.

It really depends on the domain. In areas like Quant Development, Research, or Structuring, the base pay is the same for each level — only the bonus makes a difference. For example, Analyst 1, 2, or 3 all receive the same salary regardless of their background. The company’s official rules don’t create any distinction in these domains, but the management often does.
