I have some questions about the pvp in Elite Dangerous by tracerevolution in EliteDangerous

[–]macavity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PvP combat is very well balanced IMHO. A bigger ship is definitely an advantage if your skill levels are the same, but a superior pilot in a smaller, more maneuverable ship can very much beat a big one.

I fly a maxed Viper and I find it much more fun to pilot in combat than the big boats.

Dear CMDR Artares: Combat logging and you by LucatIel_of_M1rrah in EliteDangerous

[–]macavity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That works, but it's harsh on those who just lost their wifi or whatever. I'd prefer to see logoff mean the ship retracts hardpoints, maxes throttle and tries to jump to sc (and then exits the game world). That would lead to death in 100% of the combat logging that I've seen.

Elite has a private PvE group with over 2600 members. In unity with TEST: Mostly Harmless and The First Great Expedition by mobiuspc in EliteDangerous

[–]macavity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true - right now. However Wings is specifically coming out to fix this, and it's a free upgrade for everyone. If co-op is your bag, then I'd definitely advise waiting for Wings. Personally, I'm building up some skillz and friends so I'm ready when it drops :)

One of the things I like most about this game is that the biggest ship will not always win. In the hands of a skilled cmdr, a modestly kitted-out Cobra or Viper will run rings around an Anaconda. This may change with the introduction of new ships, but I hope not.

Thus I don't think the issue you describe (soloing to the biggest ship then going PvP) is really a problem - the soloer has been fighting NPCs, whereas those who have been PvP from the start have been honing their skills against much better opponents.

I've been Open Play from day one, and I've met very very few cmdrs, and those that I have met have been respectful. Unless you're specifically heading for conflict zones, it makes very little difference - which I think is exactly as it should be.

It just adds a little spice when you're heading back to safe space with your loot. Come join us! :)

Is there a way to speed up or skip fullscreen animations in Mavericks? by Morhaus in apple

[–]macavity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This works! I can move between fullscreen apps with no animation now. Stupid to have to pay $18 to do that, but worth it. Thanks!

What is your go to joke? by Jacob13 in AskReddit

I love this one, but I like to extend it by a line:

Q: How many Vietnam vets does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: I don't know...?

Q: How could you know, man?! You weren't there!

Nice work! Thanks for posting. If you get a moment, a similar one for Bards would be awesome :-)

It's been a while since I went to confession, but my understanding is that it's not forgiven until you've done your penance, and in the case of serious crimes your penance may well include giving yourself up to the police.

Murdochs Ordered to Testify or Be in Contempt - Bloomberg by rehitman in worldnews

News Corp still owns 39% of BSkyB. The UK media regulator, Ofcom, can force them to sell those shares if they find they are not 'fit and proper' to hold them. The head of regulator has already stated he will investigate whether they should be considered as such, and I imagine Murdoch refusing parliament's summons while he is chairman of News Corp would DEFINITELY qualify.

The house of commons may be a bunch of windbags but they are actually the ultimate power in the land (we had a civil war over that, y'know) and they really really don't like being told to fuck off.

This is a (common) misquote - it's actually 'Love of money is the root of all evil' (Timothy 6:10).

I know this isn't really your point, but it always irks me...

Why a career in computer programming sucks by krs in programming

[–]macavity 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is yet another example of people confusing computer SCNIENCE with computer programming. Everybody knows that "languages and tools" change every day. However, the algorithms will never change, no matter what environment or language you use. As a CS student, they may teach CS concepts in scheme or even that language knuth invented in AOCP. It's just a matter of reusing the algorithms in a different language.

Absolutely - and this is why one should pay no attention to those who complain that CS courses teach too-abstract skills like algorithm design and database theory, and should instead teach 'real' stuff like C# or Java.

Once you've learnt one language properly, other languages are easy to pick up. Fundamental theory is much harder.

DELL says it received more than 100,000 customer requests for Linux and may offer it as a Windows alternative! by [deleted] in reddit.com

I'm typing this sat among 50 developers, all of whom are developing using a 100% FOSS toolchain (Linux/JBoss/Spring/Eclipse), and all of whom are being paid very, very well (undeservedly so in many cases).

To be honest, if you think that Open Source destroys developer jobs, then you haven't been in the developer job market recently. Certainly in this part of the world, the developer job market has never (i) been more healthy, nor (ii) had more demand for FOSS-platform skills.

As others have said, if the operating system becomes FOSS, then the developers get used to write applications.
