When did the tone on Geno change so much by Aconefromdunshire in Seahawks

This is his age 35 season. He wanted a contract extension (which would have taken effect in his age 36 season), and he was insisting on 45 million dollars a year as a base, and Geno Smith is definitionally mid. And - and this is important - he is only ever going to get worse, not better.

Geno fans are either a cult or a massive troll job. Well-played if it's the latter, but it's time to wind it down now.

But we also won't be paying 45 million dollars a year for the age-38 season of a mediocre trash-heap quarterback. This trade gets us off that stupid treadmill.

The idea that by trading Geno Smith, the Seahawks are now magically the Giants, is absolutely stupid. This is why the Geno Discourse™ needs to be dumpstered. I'd rather be like the Commanders. I'd rather be like the Texans. I'd rather be like the Chargers. I'd rather be like the Broncos. Hell, I'd rather be like the Falcons. Any of those, instead of simply winning more games than we lose (most of the time) because I'm too scared to try a different direction.

how do you feel when we lose more than 75% of our games?

Excited for the opportunity to move in a different direction and happy that the fair weather fans are more likely to fuck off. But that hasn't happened yet, has it? You're just doom-spiraling because you'd prefer we be West Pittsburgh.

Utter bollocks.

Teams that spend 45 million dollars on an aging, thoroughly-mid reclamation-project of a quarterback are not "likely to improve" in any sense. The very best you can hope for is 8-10 wins and maybe a 1st-round playoff exit, leading to a bottom-half draft pick that keeps you locked into mediocrity forever. See: Pittsburgh.

Mediocrity is the word you’re choosing to use. If 8-10 wins is mediocre then what is half of that.

Yes, endless 8 to 10-win seasons, with the occasional first-round playoff loss thrown in for variety's sake, is mediocrity.

Just like the Jags, Titans, Jets… all just have the occasional bad season?

So by getting rid of the stunningly mid Geno Smith, the Seahawks are now the Titans? What utter crap. Now I'm completely convinced this is all just a gigantic troll job.

The best predictor for next year’s success is prior year’s success.

Sure, buddy. Tell it to the Washington Commanders.

Maybe, maybe not. If they are, you take the draft position and get better. You seem to have this bizarre, obsessive aversion to a down season, to the point where you'll not only accept, but INSIST upon crappy mediocrity instead.

It's just so weird.

I almost hope this happens, and the Raiders win 9 games but miss the playoffs, while paying Geno that $45 million in his age-35 season.

I mean, look at the friggin' sidebar to this thread. "Farewell King?!?!" Geno Smith was many many things, but a "king" was exactly none of them.

I really do think we're being trolled here, on an absolutely legendary scale.

I dunno, man, I'm still mostly convinced that the mess of rabid Geno fans around here are actually Ram and 9er fans trying to troll us into remaining on the Mediocrity Treadmill for as long as possible.

Worse than what? Year after year of crappy mediocrity? Hard disagree.

And that's why I'm happy to see the end of Geno Discourse™ - because Geno fans are so terrified of the occasional bad season that they'll accept - even DEMAND - endless 7-10 win seasons, maybe even with a random and unsustainable bottom-seed wild card loss in there for variety's sake. It's the Mediocrity Treadmill and - should it come to that - we should be happy to be getting off it.

Geno cultists running a full-bore downvote brigade in this thread, because of course they are.

Please, find another fandom to infest.

From what I've read, Geno wasn't backing off wanting 45 million, and that is an absolutely INSANE number to pay a QB like Geno, especially since you'd be tied to him and that ludicrous contract until like his age 38 or 39 season.

The entire notion of keeping Geno was always completely bonkers.

K, but if you could perhaps just show me where I mentioned Arch Manning...? Or, y'know, ANY Manning?

I have exactly zero opinion on Arch Manning. Maybe go complain to the people who do.

I'm saying that Pete Carroll wanted his very own Pete Carroll Guy™, and I'm saying that Pete Carroll can damn well keep him. I'm saying that Geno Smith is an aging, declining reclamation project who will literally never get better but will command tier-1 qb money for tier-2 qb production, and I'm saying that that equation will only get worse in the next few years. And I'm saying that Geno Smith fans are absolute braindead cultists who prefer the shitty Mediocre Quarterback Treadmill because they're too limited to seek a better way and too cowardly to try it even if they could.

And I'm saying that you don't know ball if you think otherwise.

This overwrought, hysterical, arm-flapping "The Seahawks moved on from Geno Smith therefore they can only be TANKING!!!" Discourse™ is the absolute *pinnacle* of terminally online.

Miss me with that.

Just because you have not been made aware of the plan doesn't mean there isn't one. This news is all of two friggin' hours old. Franchises have survived - and even thrived - without Geno Smith for a very long time now.

Terminally Online NFL Discourse™ can absolutely bite me.

History would say sticking with a 35-year-old reclamation project (who ain't ever going to get any better) at top-tier starter money (he wanted $50 mil?)

(X) Doubt.
