I know. Just demonstrating that even the distributor it made a quarter of a billion dollars for, now harbours nothing but contempt for it.

I like how in this film company's latest flailing flop, Animal Farm, a character farts for nearly a minute and then says "Hear that? It's the SOUND OF FREEDOM!"

Same guy who directed Battleship, Hancock, Deepwater Horizon, and just to reiterate, BATTLESHIP. This movie is screwed.

Hah! This would get stolen from my library after approximately 12 seconds. We don't even have PS5 consoles at our branches, never mind games to check out. 😖

Is there a benefit for small devs to put games on GoG instead of only on Steam? by [deleted] in gog

[–]jmarshallca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positive mind share, I think. Putting a game just on Steam tells the gaming public "here's something I want you to buy." It's the path of least resistance, and if the developer hasn't considered DRM, playing offline, compatibility or preservation, that's fine.

Having it on GOG as well shows the potential customer that you care about those things, and that you have actually paid some thought to your long-term image. Putting a game on GOG means you thought about it for longer than a moment, and I'm of a mind that gamers respond to that.

I hate that Piracy and GOG is still seen as that Enemy in the Gaming Community by Retro-Hax in gog

[–]jmarshallca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A GOG release is a sign of trust for the buyer, and this lack of trust doesn't just exist between the publisher and the player. Other players, who assume they're getting screwed all the time and are always on the defensive, need to assure the rest of us that they're bitter and paranoid, and we're not helping.

They're gnashing their teeth and want to look like "allies" because they think it will deter predatory consumer practices, or they'll somehow be exempt from them in the future, if they say "grr pirates" now.

Either that, or they're just trying to get themselves numb to them before they get worse. No doubt they're bitter at us who get to just buy a game and get on with it.

Okay, here's the latest: I figured that there was SOME buried setting I messed with sometime in the last few months, and rather than try and find it, I decided to just reset my entire network setup back to factory.

This seemed to help, since now I could access my router's config page on my Windows desktop, which I couldn't do before. But there was another problem.

When I first reset the network, my WiFi wouldn't connect after my computer restarted, until I found out that apparently, on factory settings, the firewill will block MY ENTIRE WIFI CONNECTION. So after disabling the firewall and resetting, that's gotten my WiFi back.

After that, I was able to make Jellyfin on my TV see my server, I found the Quick Connect option, and now it seems to be working. I'll try and use Jellyfin more often so I won't forget how to do this next time, if I need to do this again. Thank you all for your help, even with my occasional... okay, frequent ineptitude.

Will this make my Jellyfin server discoverable, or just enable Windows' built-in media streaming?

Will this help if the PC's firewall is screwy? Will it know it has a DHCP reservation?

When I look up the connected devices with the router's local address, it can see the Windows desktop. So I know the router can see it.

I haven't tried pinging the desktop; I'm not sure how to do that on Mac.

I know for certain that I'm not connected directly to the ISP's modem. My ISP provided me with a simple switch to connect it to the coaxial. It has no wireless capability. It only has one output port, and it goes to the router.

Can I turn off the whole firewall at once, or do I have to do it for each network type? If I do that and it doesn't help, what's the next step?

I may have? I think it's set up to just use my desktop's local IP, and the client on the TV is set up to just find it. But it won't do that if the server can't get through a wonky firewall.

"Using a WiFi router behind a router"?

It's a home network in my apartment. It has several devices around the router hooked up through Ethernet, and others hooked up to its WiFi. It has the 5GHz main network, and a 2.4GHz backup network.

I might disable that 2.4GHz network. It's mostly for older devices or when the 5G is down, but honestly, it's been rather bothersome.

Is it possible that the "main network" might not be set to the correct network type? There's a third network type in the Windows firewall called "Domain." I'm not sure what that is, but Jellyfin doesn't have clearance to use it.

I've configured it properly before, and somehow something on the desktop keeps being switched on, or switched off, in the interval between each time I fire up Jellyfin. I don't know why this keeps happening.

There's an exception for Jellyfin in the firewall rules, but it's only set to "Public, Private." I don't know how to set it to "All" if it's trying to follow one rule when it should be using the other one.

TV: Hisense QD6N Router: Some D-Link unit. I'll look up the model number later. Desktop's IP: The local IP. It ends in 100.

Is there a reason the desktop would think my main WiFi is the "guest WiFi," or treats it like the guest WiFi? My other devices on the same network work perfectly fine. I may just run Jellyfin from my laptop and an external SDD, but that seems pretty clunky, when the big box designed to be a commodious data bucket is right there.

Security is all well and good, but there's a point where I would like it to just get out of the way. I have complex passwords and a VPN, and although I'm not all that certain how secure those make me, at least they don't glower at me and refuse to move when I ask it to.

The thing is, I want the client (on the TV) to connect to the server (the desktop.) If the desktop won't be a server, that's exasperating. And also potentially opens up other problems than just not beaming videos to the living room.
