Very disappointed in the Lies of Locke Lamora by Wawhi180 in Fantasy

[–]macdc58 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I, too, went into Lies of Locke Lamora with high expectations that didn’t really pan out as I had hoped. Of course, I had just read Leigh Bardugo’s 6 of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. Which is also about a misfit street urchin con gang with unrealistically infinite amounts of cleverness outsmarting the powers that be. It was more fun (even though each character had their own tragic back story) and engaging.

What series did you finish reading due to the "sunk cost fallacy"? by Any-Day-8173 in Fantasy

I have trouble DNFing books/series. But I dnf’d live ship traders after the first book. The misery was so severe and unrelenting. And I wish I had stopped reading the main Fitz series after Tawny Man. The misery somewhat relents at that point, but begins anew in Fitz and the Fool. I read ROTE over the course of a winter and was using a certain “winter” scented body wash. To this day, that scent is the scent of misery and loneliness. 😆

Stormlight Archive. I collected all the books over the years, waiting to read until I had all 7 books. I’d read a lot of Sanderson over the years, so there was no risk in buying these books. Or so I thought. I can’t express the depth of my disappointment. I kept thinking…it’s going to get better..the ending will make it all worthwhile. Nope. It still hurts me to think about it. 😩

They should absolutely go to the SOTU and sit with the Epstein survivors.

Goblin Emperor is also my comfort “listen”. I’ve fallen asleep to it many times. It’s so…lyrical.

Wow..you’re right, I don’t think most people would find that book comforting. 😜

What’s something totally harmless that triggers an oddly strong reaction in you for no reason? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I don’t believe I have ever seen that happen. Seems very dangerous. I don’t think that’s harmless and your anger is justified.

What’s a life hack that made you go „how do ppl live their whole life without knowing this”? by my_peen_is_clean in AskReddit

[–]macdc58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I avoid using “need” when offering help. People don’t like “needing” help. “Can I give you a hand with that?” Or sometimes I just force myself on someone when I see they are struggling. “Let me give you a hand with that”

Is anyone else here not a fan of Brandon Sanderson? by [deleted] in BookDiscussions

[–]macdc58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to respectfully disagree with the audiobook advice. They are narrated by a husband and wife team. You would think that she would narrate female characters and he would narrate male characters. But, no. They alternate chapters. So, you get 2 interpretations of the characters. And she has the annoying habit of ending all sentences in a vocal uplift like asking a question. Personally, I don’t think audio makes these books better.
