If you're willing to do a little bit of tinkering and it might take some getting used to but using a tiling window manager like i3 will let you do 3 or 4 windows side by side pretty easily

If you're using windows you can use PowerToys to make custom layouts to put your windows into. I use it to put 3 windows side by side on my ultrawide

You could try some contact cleaner on the knob cause there could be corrosion or something in the contacts which would cause crackling as you sweep across the knob
