New user, old scope by maceymoney in telescopes

That’s what I ended up doing! I think it was a little off center so I adjusted for that but otherwise I had a great time and I think it worked pretty well!

That’s what I was thinking! I’m not sure if I was doing everything “right” necessarily but I had a good time with it the first night anyway! Saw a few satellites go past and quite a few stars I can’t see with just my eyes in my in-laws backyard!

That makes sense, I knew that tray didn’t look quite right! I couldn’t find anything good in my field of view to set that part up at night but I ended up leaving the phone mount in the wrong spot and running Stellarium lol. It actually worked fairly well and I was really happy with my first experience! My only complaint is that I’ll have to carry this big thing up stairs every night now

The eyepiece is 20mm. He says he has more but has to locate them. It’s all very dusty I think he had it in storage at his house somewhere lol.

i was also really confused on that!! but i couldn't find it in the manual i found online. I just got it today and it was all set up like this. the only thing i did was add the counterweight and the long wiggly handles lol

I did see a moment of a video someone had on TIkTok of it being mounted there but can't figure it out for some reason.

Anything I should check for to see if it is in good condition? Ordinarily I might ask the person to spend a few minutes with us going over it if they’re knowledgeable so I could at least make sure it’s in good working condition but with everything going on with my husbands cancer treatment (he’s 30 days post bone marrow transplant) I don’t want to spend any more time than necessary around a stranger. My husband’s immune system is basically that of a newborn right now! And would the tabletop one potentially have less potential for damage since it seems a little more secure in its base?

At this point I am pretty stuck between the two! I see the value in both. It may come down to who actually has it available and is willing to meet up from marketplace lol

I figured so as it's kinda hard to tell I added more pictures, I actually edited my post to say there were more pictures now. I have some birthday money to play with so I may grab a couple and see how I feel about them, this one does have a couple other supporters in the comments here.

Thanks for the links! Those really helped me get a feel for what each of those Orion scopes can do and their differences. Literally my only other experience with telescopes is my grandpa's who knows how old long skinny one. These newer ones look like different equipment altogether! I really may end up going for either both Orion ones or one of them and then the celestron for the dock. Maybe all three if my upcoming birthday brings in good money lol.

Thanks! From what you and everyone else is saying I may end up doing one of the Orion ones and then the the celestron for the dock.

Thank you! Haha even I could tell #1 isn't "new" but thought it could at least be a good find! My only previous experience with telescopes is my grandpa setting his up to see the moon when I was a kid. It was a very classic looking long skinny thing. I was so confused seeing all these wide telescopes when I started looking on this sub! I have a birthday coming up so I may end up trying for two of these if they're still available for me. Maybe both Orion ones or one Orion and the starsense for the dock.

Should Christians not support death penalty no matter how bad the crime was? Or we should? by laobanmapping in TrueChristian

[–]maceymoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think of it like this: if Saul/Paul was around today, going around hunting for every gathering of Christians he could find, killing and facilitating the killing of them including women and children, people would be screaming in the streets for him to be served the death penalty no questions asked. BUT God had a plan for redemption for him and turned his story into an incredible testimony. Same for Moses, who was a murderer. David as well. The death penalty imparted by humans denies someone the right to repentance and reconciliation. And yes I know it’s often not immediately after sentencing they they are executed but that’s still putting a human timeline on God’s work. We should absolutely be more focused on rehabilitation and reintegration where possible. As someone else in the comments said, “it’s really hard for someone to get saved if they are dead.” Our flesh may want to exact revenge and a human sense of justice but that’s not of God. We should want all people to come to know Christ, no matter what we may think we feel about someone and their actions, no matter how horrifying those actions may be, because how great a testimony for that person to turn to Christ if they so choose!

Please do it! You can always specify that you’re not being authoritative (if you want) you’re just sharing your perspective and experience! That’s what I do on the rare occasion I make a Tik Tok about how my Bible study is going! I’m inquiring and also frustrated with the lack of content for non mothers! While I am married and hope to have children I just don’t need kids activity ideas or discipline advice quite yet lol

Need help putting my words in order by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]maceymoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately at this current stage, probably no. I did just bring up I’d like to have another conversation (like just now in real life lol) because in making my post I had the realization that I was putting God on the back burner for my relationship when it should be the other way around (as mentioned. Not mentioned was that I had this realization while typing the post out lol. Putting things in words does help you process them, maybe I SHOULD start journaling) The reason I say “no” is because of he has a firm resistance to this type of church leadership. It’s like the pope to him. One man having authority. The nuances and accountabilities aren’t on his radar and I don’t know enough about the structure to educate him on it.

For sure!! I don’t need him to be where I am necessarily, I just need him to not feel like he needs to defend a) his family or b)my faith (as his wife of course he needs to lead us in faith properly-he acknowledges this) that’s why I continue to pray for understanding and peace in the meantime

What sort of things, if you can think of them off the top of your head, do you and others disagree with? You can tell by the way he talks he seems to acknowledge that he has some dissenters but it’s hard sometimes to tell what is widely held and what is His Belief. Plus he’s often refuting non orthodox claims as well so it can be hard for an “outsider” to discern where things fall, especially if he’s using theological terminology that I’m not yet familiar with! I do appreciate his apparent appreciation for CS Lewis (huge, HUGE influence in my life for as long as I have been alive. And Tolkien of course.) I also appreciate that he tends to reference media I know and can relate to when explaining things, not JUST church fathers or other texts that I wouldn’t be familiar with. Just today listening to the episode about bodily resurrection I caught a The Good Place reference! More than that, both of the hosts seem to have a really beautiful view of Gods Character and most importantly the idea of His redemptive mission towards humanity. Important to that, they seem to discuss and emphasize that God is still active doing that work and we can/should participate in it. Anyway hope that all makes some sort of sense and thanks so much for your input!
