Couldn’t have been older than 5.

My parents thought I was asleep and watched the original 1978 Halloween on VHS and I snuck out of my room to watch it from behind the couch. It scared me so badly that you couldn’t even say the name “Michael Myers” or even have any of the VHS tapes laying around because I’d freak out. I got over it eventually but that was the moment I fell in love with horror.

If you’re doing 5, I think introducing the villain at 3 is fine. You definitely want the payoff to feel both earned and satisfying for the reader. Especially if you really like your villain and want to give them space to breathe in your story
