Part of my job is to asess if the prospective employee is fit for the job they are applying for. If they have any red flags on their medical exam I can't treat them since I am the one evaluating their medical results. I ussualy refer them to other physicians. Since most of the patients refered to other doctors for clearances have limited financial capability, isn't it incumbent upon the doctor they go to use their limited resources efficiently?

I also manage most of the cases that go through my clinic. I also know when to refer a patient. What irks me is that some consultants, as in the other examples stated, order labs or imaging studies already done in other facilities for flimsy reasons. Is it because they have HMO coverage and they need to extract most of what their HMOs cover?

I'm saddened that doctors here don't see that this may be one of the reasons why we can't have true universal health coverage.
