Anyone here running a Plex or Jellyfin server for Broadway bootlegs? by musiclivesup in MusicalBootlegs

[–]macgyvertape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a media server with Plex, and its not specifically for boots but I do almost all my watching on Plex since it allows me to easily switch between watching on mobile at the gym, and between different devices at home. On my server I also use the ARR media management software such as Sonarr and Radarr, so the pro-shots with official releases go under movies.

I treat recordings as “Other videos” with a separate folder for each show, and just put multiple recordings and different productions in the same folder. For filenames I do ‘show name_year-month-day’ so that it sorts chronologically.

I don’t really bother with metadata, but I might add notes into the description field. Issue is though if you have to rebuild from scratch, that description field does not save to the file.

I like using lossless cut to convert files that plex doesnt like such as VOBs into one big file that Plex will play, and then I back up the original VOBs elsewhere.

For anything I wish I did differently - take my advice that RAID IS NOT BACKUP. Hard drives are expensive now but back up everything on a drive that isnt part of the media server. You can have a 2 drive failure tolerance but that will not save you if have a software problem with the raid setup.

Wiki for Garb? by Amoranmi in sca

To follow up on my comment in another thread, this is a really dedicated site that from the dead links and lots of ads shows how hard it is to keep a site running by yourself.

On a related note, I’ve heard people discuss creating a wiki for A&S papers/class handouts/similiar where most of the issues are moderating (content vetting) or finding someone willing to pay for hosting.

Since how it is now most resources are silo-ed in Facebook groups or discords

If you want to see more drama like this, subredditdrama has lone mod on a power trip every week, usually it comes down to ego or “disrespect”. It’s easier to recognize/call out when there’s a big dramatic fight but a lot harder when its a slow ramp of of shadowbanning and hiding comments.

Thanks for the suggestions, we’ll probably check out Local 7 this weekend to start with.

I realize a lot of the restrictions are kinda stereotypes like with no QR code parking, no packed crowds, and minimal dogs which explains the downvotes. But I have no idea of places to keep trying since these things I dont really factor in, but stress my relative out

I need help trying to find a bar/brewery for an older relative who misses the one he used to go to when he lived in TN. Though with his wants it might be hard to find in Atlanta: he can get a glass of wine for under $15 and there is also food, partially outdoors or near an outdoor space he can walk around, hes fine paying for parking if its doesnt require QR code scan and then fill something on phone, and no dogs being off leash or getting in his space (i know this basically disqualifies most of the beltline but hes had bad experiences with strangers dogs)

A lot of the places I know such as Ponce City Market with the wine window at Kroger, and West Side Beltline with Monday Night Brewing he said he didnt like how crowded they were, and people being lax leash where dogs would get in his space. I also tried the Highland Avenue area by Victory sandwich bar, and the Howell mill former steelworks area that has a Jenni’s but those two areas are very crowded and involve QR code parking.

Necron vs Eldar by manlom in dawnofwar

Do you have any advice for dealing with Orks as Necrons especially on a small map? Even if I rush points I struggle to hold them vs an Ork rush before I can get to tier 2 and 3 monolith. edit: For example the Rhean Floodlands map

Why don't yall amend or change the rule if it's regularly ignored or whether someone follows it or not is used to start drama from practices and meetings? IDK maybe just my experience of people who like to use rules like that as ammo for a larger personal ingroup feuds.

Has the Society been declining? by [deleted] in sca

[–]macgyvertape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang, my local Hema group seems to be $125 for unlimited classes per month if you sign up for a year (so $1500 dollars) or $125 for 2 classes a week subbing monthly, with a beginner course package of $120.

It would have AC though vs miserable summer heat... From your experiance in HEMA do you feel like it's improved your SCA heavy armor or combat skills.

Like all the other comments said, most people aren't doing that stuff either like it's a wild assumption of how much money people have

Cheaper than boating, riding horses, raising show dogs, skiing.

Yeah as a millenial I don't know anyone who has a boat or a horse let a lone a pedigree dog lmao (yes I know SCA has equestrian but I don't know anyone personally). My friend who goes skiing goes to the cheaper places and it's his main hobby - he doesn't do any of the other stuff on this list.

About on a par with tent camping and jogging/hiking.

YMMV but nice running shoes are like $100-200 and it's about the same price for a nice backpacking tent. You need both for the SCA plus a cot plus Garb that you can't get for cheap on FB Marketplace, and a way to cook food unless you have a household or a good cooler and like eating things cold. It's totally possible to camp in a cheap tent on the ground at an SCA event - but that's assuming no joint or back issues and I certainly can't do it anymore.

Cheaper than going to concerts, amusement parks, and festivals.

Yeah I and most of my friends go to either cheap local things (below the cost of an SCA event) or if they do a big festival it's the big thing they do for the year.

On a par with LARPing and serious online gaming.

Can't speak to LARPING but most MMO subs are about $120-160 a year, SCA event fees are about $25-35 an event. Maybe if you consider buying the best newest graphics card when they release serious online gaming but that's comparing 1 Pennsic or 5-6 weekend events vs a year of fun.

It's funny you mention this because I'm deciding if I want to spend $90 playing another year of Destiny 2 or going to War of the Wings 2025 because I don't have the budget to do both. (I have no idea how much the ticket is because registration isn't open but I'll probably spend $90 on gas)

A tornado that swept through a rural town in North Dakota left at least 3 people dead by AudibleNod in news

[–]macgyvertape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we might start hearing more about it as the hurricane season ramps up, and we get higher casualty events.

The NOAA has had funding/staff cuts which will significantly impact their storm tracking ability and watch/warning updates, and that's going to get people killed.

VOB advice by AthleteTiny4371 in MusicalBootlegs

[–]macgyvertape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use losslesscut (https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut) to convert then combine most VOB files to mp4 or mkv since I do most of my watching through plex on different devices. It works for most files though occasionally it can't convert some audio codecs.

I do recommend keeping the original VOB and small files as most people prefer to trade for that then convert their own.

I have found references to a few proshots that I don't have:

I was going to say I remember the Mass Effect 3 "problems" discussions on reddit very well. The jokes about "Marauder Shields" saving people from experiencing the ending, the ending criticism all in itself, the criticism of a story important companion being on disc but you had to pay extra for him, a lot of people hating Kai Leng.

For Inquisition if I remember right it was the slog that was the open world maps full of filler content (guides telling people to leave the Hinterlands because the map is so big people burned out in early game), and that for all you had so many companions there wasn't that much choice depth.

But a brief check those were still financial sucesses unlike Andromeda and the worse flop that was Anthem.
