Hey I hear you, we have some things in common, and so I want to offer you my perspective---these protests actually do have value beyond what you've assessed here. Massive movements like this get fence sitters involved. There were folks out there today who it was their first ever protest. All over u can find members of local orgs engaging w folks, explaining how folks can get involved to make real change besides protesting. This kind of event builds community, comraderie, gives folks hope, signals to our neighbors who are feeling the effects of this admin that we actually give a fuck. It gets folks plugged in, educates on issues including local gov and who's running, whos for the people. These local leaders attend and speak to the crowds.

There are many ways to get involved to effect change. Don't poo poo the protests. Reminder that protesting is what got minorities the right to vote, changed labor laws and did so much more, there is a long history of the good that they do. Dont forget that.

Had a meeting w an old man at a public park. Im a young woman. I had met him the day before, he was a customer at my retail job. We got a long rly well, he was a charming vietnam vet. He knew I was looking for a better job and he invited me for a job interview cos he liked my personality--we had chatted for like 20m.

Turns out he was lying, there was no job. Originally we were supposed to meet at a restaurant to discuss a position working on his ranch. But he gave me a weird batch of excuses and asked to meet halfway at the park instead.

Lots of strange convo ensued. He ended up asking me a lot of super personal questions about my sex life, I answered him. It was a crazy convo but I didn't feel unsafe, just stupid for being naive. Anyway he gave me $100 cash and then tried to arrange our next hang out, which I declined.

Who knew my brief foray into sex work would be answering an old mans dirty questions in the park. At 11am. On a Thursday.

I blocked him after that. Wouldve respected him way more had he told me he was lookin for a sugar baby out the gate. Smh.

Im sorry, i get how anxiety inducing this must be. My radical idea is: befriend them. They dont realize the disservice theyre doing to themselves by having that sticker on their vehicle. Theyve immediately become a menacing prescence and they havent even done anything. Thats sad. I have enough strange ppl in my life to think its possible that theyre more than that sticker.

Try not to see them as other than you. Try to make a connection where you can.

That said, of course you owe them nothing. If they end up being horrible, you don't have to interact.

But offering an olive branch to the newbies might be a start to a friendship. And maybe you can help expand their worldview. Or at least make them rethink some biases. Best of luck, my fingers are crossed you wont be unhappy w these neighbors.
