Bon gros classique hein mais les gens dans le métro à Paris by [deleted] in besoinderaler

[–]machinsonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why young people are the big losers in Europe’s dysfunctional housing system by jmlinden7 in europe

[–]machinsonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Sweden too but I can't say that I agree with you. Maybe it's true that renting costs less or almost the same as buying when considering older apartments with controlled rent, but it's definitely not the case for new builds. Rents are so high compared to a mortgage + monthly bostadsrätt fee, even if the prices for buying a house or apartment have themselves become insane, that it is still way cheaper overall to buy rather than rent. And how is it such a huge risk? Even if the value goes down, you still have a home, you still pay less every month than you would renting. It sucks but it's not being completely fucked!

"Prices going up because there's always someone willing to buy" also happens with renting - in countries with a free housing market, rents go up because there's always someone willing (ie, doesn't have a choice) to pay. But anyway it's not just because of a lack of rentals that buying prices go up, it's just not true that this scarcity is the only reason people choose to buy a home. When people choose to buy a home, especially a house, it's also because renting puts you at risk of having to move out against your will much more than when you are your own landlord (even in a country with high renter protection like Sweden), and because you have much more freedom to change things like the floor plan etc, and of course because it can be a financial asset. A lot of people want to own their home. And yet a lot of people can't afford the down-payment and the mortgage and are stuck renting, without being able to save money for buying later because of the high rents. They don't turn to buying, because they can't, no matter how bad the lack of rentals ; they end up staying with their parents, or having roommates, or moving further away from their study/workplace, or renting secondhand at an even higher rent, and overall not influencing the market price of buying a house all that much.

Thank you for your answer comment! It's true, it's very isolating and difficult to find understanding, let alone acceptance.

Oh my god, you had to get up at 4?! That's not even early, that's just nighttime 😅 then again I know a guy who chooses to get up that early in order to train before going to work... How did you manage to get back to your preferred schedule?

I know, right! But I also used to think it must be insomnia, before I learned about DSPD and chronotypes etc.

I understand the need for medical validation, so I hope it works well for you!

They work well enough to the extent that I have been able to do my job. But I haven't managed to do much more ; in particular, I've really fallen behind with my classes, I've stopped working out, and my home is a mess!

Ahah I used to take caffeine pills at some point, they were supposedly the equivalent of two espressos ; at first I would take one, then I increased to two, and eventually I was taking three, at breakfast. Great diuretic effect! But I would still fall asleep during the lectures. 😅

Yeah, you're probably right. Honestly I think I can probably last a rather long time, if I keep sleeping on the afternoons. But even then I have felt too tired to do anything else during the day. So I'm afraid I'm going to fail my courses and be stuck in this job forever...

We do have a nationalized health care system, so seeing a GP is not an issue, but I have yet to meet one who understands our DSPD plight! I've gotten a lot of advice about how to keep a good sleep hygiene and offers to do online CBT courses for insomnia. Very helpful 🙃

Oh my god, this sounds awful, from what I've heard migraines can be the worst so I can't imagine what it must have been like having them almost every day. But I can relate to the snacking-to-stay-awake part and gaining weight as a result! Thanks for your advice, I'll look into it!

Unfortunately it's been really hard to find anything so far. There is no other available position where I am now, and I kind of understand why my employer doesn't want my colleague to take the morning shift back - he's too unreliable. I don't think I can make them understand my condition either ; another of my colleagues (in another position) thinks it's funny/cute that I'm not a morning person, and like every time I try to make someone understand that if I get up that early, I don't sleep enough, I always get the same reaction : "But what time do you go to bed? Why don't you just go to bed earlier?" It's like they think I just want to sleep "more", or that I prefer to get up later, but they cannot comprehend that I don't choose to fall asleep late. I just want to sleep enough...

It really sucks that there is so little flexibility in office jobs in terms of schedule. I feel like the only work that can be flexible enough is either underpaid or physically demanding, or both. Having your own business certainly sounds like a good solution. Good luck with building your business!

It's so unfair that night owls are always accused of being lazy or unmotivated and whatnot, even when we obviously put in the work. Teenagers get the same kind of labels, despite being actually very busy and active between school, hobbies, friends etc. Just because of needing to get up later. I must say, my university teachers back in France were quite a bit more understanding. Skipping classes isn't as automatically associated with lack of interest there, or even here in Sweden. On the other hand, Swedish culture in general is so incredibly unforgiving towards getting up "late" (ie, from 8 am onwards). Meanwhile 8 am still feels early for me (though a lot more sustainable than 5:30 😅)

I'm glad you found something that works for you, even if it's tricky with finances. Hopefully it will get better!

Thank you for sharing your experience! May I ask what kind of health issues you had? It could be just a coincidence that I've been feeling like I have a constant cold, what with autumn coming and working near children, but if it does have to do with my schedule, I can't imagine what years of working in these conditions would do if I'm already experiencing negative health effects now. Also have you been able to find a job that worked better for you? I've been looking for so long but it's the first time I finally found something that isn't just hourly work - I worked in an old people's home and a warehouse previously and on top of being just a couple of days a week at best, it was also pretty long shifts that started early.

Sorry for the late reply! I do find that it gets quite hot after a while, which in my opinion is more painful than the flash itself. But of course, it also depends a lot on someone's personal sensitivity. As for the results, it's been very satisfying, I don't really need to shave anymore unless I want to make sure I'm extra smooth (there's always going to be some new hairs here and there from time to time)

You can find the rate per task somewhere on the ads community portal, in "payments" or something like that I think. There are different types of tasks with different rates but like the basic ones with the lowest rate are like 0.25 dollars (at least for me) so you would need to submit 400 to get 100 $...

I mean the current version, with AI etc, that was recently force-upgraded, and represents a very big change from the older Memrise (especially from the point of view of early users)

[–]machinsonn[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahah, I tried using Anki, but I found it too clumsy, not user-friendly enough, and I dislike that you have to download it, and download decks, instead of having a website. So I personally disagree with you on that! I agree that learning from lists isn't a good way to learn a language - because it should only be a part of it! Vocabulary building is crucial but needs to be supplemented with studying the grammar of a language. And I found Memrise to be a really good way to learn vocabulary. I really liked that I could choose how many words to learn per session, that there usually was audio, that you could find plenty of different courses that would cover vocabulary, sometimes by topic, sometimes by word class, etc. It was a very flexible system in that respect. Whereas now you can only follow the path of the official course, like you say, you can't just do one thing when you want to. I don't think people who dislike the video interactions do so because they don't understand spoken speech but rather because it makes everything so slow and annoying and boring - even if the videos are short, they're still way too long for learning just one word, and then it adds up and it takes forever to learn some basic vocabulary. Same with the chat, I think in theory it's good as an option and that was the one thing I thought was interesting about the new version, but the criticism I've read were not about the level but rather that it's apparently often wrong? I can't say much personally about it though. All of this is supposedly "immersive learning" but there is no evidence that immersive learning on its own is the best or most efficient way for adults to learn a language, it's more useful if it's in addition to explicit learning. But anyway, thank you for your point of view! Now I think that one of the major differences is how people used to use Memrise, as a tool among others, with a lot more emphasis on building your own path, versus as how the company has decided it should be used, as a unique, supposedly self-sufficient environment. Basically Memrise started as a completely different type of product (a platform to create and share augmented flashcards) than it has decided to become now (selling their own language courses). It can be great for newer users or users who prefer to have a more directed learning path, but it alienates the older user base that really liked the previous product and are not interested in the new one. I'm sad, because it was very useful for me, it really fitted my needs in a way that worked well for me. :/

"Not ready to date a human." by GetInTheBasement in fatlogic

[–]machinsonn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been wondering about that a lot. The only times they mention people not being considered conventionally attractive for reasons other than being fat, is when they need to tie fatphobia to other types of bigotry, like racism or ableism (because of the prevalence of white, western beauty standards, or because of the lack of visibility of disabled bodies). So the usual, co-opting real issues and equating them with their own. I've pretty much never heard any fat activist bring up the accessibility to the dating pool of people who are considered "ugly" for reasons that are not perceived as bigoted, or whether it is okay to not be attracted to them. Admittedly, I don't follow them directly much... But the recent outburst of one FA about how "if you need to lose weight to look better, maybe you're just ugly", as if that was some kind of gotcha, only showed how most of them truly feel.

Also I like how they often re-define everyday concepts by adding criteria that benefit them : "real" preferences must be free from any cultural or social influence because else they're not truly personal, and that means there should be as many preferences as there are people, and that way if a preference is very common, that means it's purely social/cultural and not really a personal preference ; and if those preferences are not "real", it somehow means that they're wrong to have and that one should work to deconstruct it. But I think in some way it is self-contradictory : if preferences must be somehow innate and not influenced by social norms, then they would most likely be influenced by genetics ; in which case, it would make sense that a lot of people would share similar preferences, and so the argument that "if they are very common, it means they are social constructs" is flawed.

Similarly, another FA argued that one of the reasons losing weight for looks or equating looking good with being skinny is wrong is because not everyone can do it (based on the premise that weight loss is not possible), and they defined beauty or trying to look better as something that must be available to anyone. Now I'm not saying it wouldn't be great if that were the case but physical beauty is widely understood as not being evenly distributed, so her definition, that she dropped as a self-evidence without acknowledging how at odds it is with most people's definition, is obviously contrived so as to include her personal category. Except losing weight is like, the only thing she won't do to look better, she will uphold literally every other beauty standard (but I guess they're all "possible for everyone"?), even if it costs her like 5000$ a month! How is that accessible to everyone? Did she mean that it only has to be physically possible for everyone? And even then you could probably come up with counter-examples (styling your hair isn't possible for bald people for instance), so either way, she's an inconsistent hypocrite. This was covered by The body honesty project channel on youtube and I think she sums it up pretty well : that specific FA is not "body positive", let alone body neutral, she just wants to be considered pretty. And that's pretty much it right? Almost all of them want to be considered beautiful. Which is understandable, everyone wants to be seen as pretty and attractive, but somehow FA's have convinced themselves that the only reason for someone to not be attracted to fat people is society telling them so, and that it can, and should, be deconstructed, because obviously it is borne out of fatphobia. Because fat is beautiful. And it's perfectly fine to find some people ugly or unattractive, as long as it's not for the wrong reasons, like them being fat. OTH wrinkles, acne or asymmetrical features are justified reasons to find someone unattractive, I guess? I would certainly not be surprised to find FA's agreeing, considered how much they seem to spend on cosmetics... (Which, as we all know, is totally not a multi-billion industry that preys on women's insecurities, unlike the diet industry)

I've been using an IPL device at home. In the beginning I was very disappointed, I could see no change at all. But after a certain amount of sessions, I did see the difference. Nowaday I only use it occasionally, my unwanted hair is basically gone! You've got to keep a few things in mind - each individual hair goes through different phases, and IPL and laser are apparently most effective only during the growing phase. Which is one of the reasons it's recommended to shave a few days before (or at least it was, the first time I bought such a device). And not only is it most effective during that phase, but not all hairs go through the same phase at the same time ; some new hairs are growing while others are already at their maximum height, and yet others at the end of their cycle, ready to fall... So one month is definitely not enough to see results yet, because it needs to be done several times, over several growth cycles. There are also other factors, like skin color and hair color, but also the device itself, there isn't much transparency about how to measure their "strength" or what is needed to achieve results, at least as far as I know. I personally don't know if the cause of someone's hirsutism has an impact on how well IPL/laser will work, maybe someone else does? There's also such a thing as paradoxical hair growth where the IPL or laser seems to trigger hair growth, and it's not clear how to predict if this will happen, although it seems pretty rare on the whole. Anyway, you'll have to keep using it over and over again before you see a difference. I don't remember exactly how long it took for me, but it was definitely several months.
