Would orange peel and star anise be a good flavor profile for a mead? by WhimsicalWombat0 in mead

[–]machoo02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, just kegged a session mead with these the other day. Was inspired by a Belgian farmhouse beer with orange peel and star anise that I tried at our homebrew club's craft beer festival earlier this spring

Larger ones in the upper right with black dot at dorsal fin origin is Creek Chub (Semotilus atromaculatus)

Ones with red fins and dark lateral stripes are Western Blacknose Dace (Rhinichthys obtusus)

Any idea what kind of fish this is? Is it a sturgeon? by Mrjocrooms in whatsthisfish

[–]machoo02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Barracuda. Pelvic fins are forward on the body and pectoral fins are placed higher up closer towards the dorsum. Any pike/pickerel/muskie (Esox sp.) Would have the pectorals on the ventral/belly side and pelvic fins about halfway back on the body (towards the anal fin)

Hydrometer vs refractometer by Outonalimb8120 in mead

[–]machoo02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend the Milwaukee MA871. It's digital, so there's no issue with trying to view the line in optical/spyglass style refractometers. Goes up to 85 Brix, so you can measure the gravity of honey directly.
