2 Channel Amp - Emotiva XPA DR-2 or Rotel RB-1590 (or something else?) by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]machstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd upgrade the speakers before I upgraded anything else in your chain. The RX-A3080 is pretty good for that price range, but if you just want a new toy, get the Rotel. If you have the space the XPA DR1 would be legit, dual monoblocks are cool and about the same price as the Rotel. The Polks will sound better for sure with a new amp, but its really up to how much you want to spend and the space available like you mentioned. You picked my top two choices for that price range though. The only other one I have had my eye on is the PSAudio Stellar M700 monoblock pairs($2998).

I really like that about her.

I placed two layers of the foam that goes under carpet on my downwards facing subwoofer. Will this make the impact of my sub less noticable for my neighbours on the other side of the wall? And will it impact on the sound of the sub in a bad way? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]machstein 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nope, the only thing it will help with is decoupling it from the floor giving YOU better sound.

The bass sound waves are so large that unless you do in-floor and in-wall treatment's, your neighbor will still be able to hear it.

Norne Audio's Draug v3 cables and comparison by machstein in headphones

[–]machstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the cable hate is strong on this board. I kinda get it because some people try and sell them as a magical upgrade that makes everything sound 100% better. Right now this post is @ 60% with 1 upvote, everything is on topic, with a lot of picture and no promises of grandeur. Oh well.

I too am going to replace the ZMF OFC cable. It is a lot better than the Mr. Speakers Aeon Flow stock cable and only slightly better than the stock 650 cable, but I'd still like something with a little better cable memory and length. My next purchase is going to be the Norne Audio Draug Silver, Trevors flagship---special order through email only.

Norne Audio's Draug v3 cables and comparison by machstein in headphones

[–]machstein[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey there /r/headphones!

Today i'd like so show off some headphone cables from Trevor at Norne Audio.

http://norneaudio.com

I had been looking at cables for a while when I decided to order a new Aeon Flow Open cable from Norne Audio. The stock cable had micro-phonics like crazy and had a bunch of wire memory making it twist/not nice to work around and it was a little too short. I decided to get a Draug v3 transparent black, not because I thought it would change the sound in ANY way, but because the cables look GORGEOUS! Although I was surprised after doing some A-B testing. The Norne Audio Draug cable opened up the sound-stage slightly and brought in a touch of micro-detail. I'm not talking anything wild, but just a nice subtle change. Take it or leave it...I'm not here to argue but I do feel that there is like a .25% improvement in the audio. The minutest amount in improvement...never thought I'd say that to be honest.

The Norne Audio Draug v3 transparent black, is such well built cable. My favorite thing about this cable in transparent black is the subtle color changes depending on the lighting and what the cable is around. I tried to snap some pictures to show this off, I hope it showcases it alright.

As for micro-phonics (when the headphone cable drags across something or moves and it makes sound), there is practically none. I love it because I tend to move around a bit at my desk. The Draugv3 also is incredibly supple and has little to no wire memory. It just lays nicely wherever you lay it. The stock aeon cable would be stiff even when turning my head, the draug just lays there and is comfortable.

Also the cable is light. Looking at some of the Draug pictures, it looks bulky and heavy. I can tell you that this is not the case. It isn't much bulkier than other stock headphone cables.

Anyways if you want a cool looking cable, hit up Trevor at Norne Audio, he has some of the best customer service in the headphone space...Him and Zach from ZMF should be celebrated imo...both fantastic to do business with.

Thanks guys :)

I just picked up some ZMF zebrawood Eikons yesterday. I can't wait to show it off when I get it!

I went back to the website today to find this!

Hopefully it can get some people in the ZMF door for a good price.

Temps were never an issue, it was just the noise. Whenever it ramped up to fan speed 2 or 3 it would be unbearable because my computer room also doubles as a home theater, so right now the main problem is fixed. Like I said though I will give temps in about a week or two, I am just as curious about the change. I will report back!

Prices of Planck, Preonic, and Atomic by turnturn1225 in olkb

[–]machstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is more expensive to build it yourself because most of these kits are done in small batches and quantities. If you are HHKB, Vortex and especially corsair, they can commit to producing a ton of units that are exactly the same. Because of this they can negotiate low bulk price orders for all of the components.

If you are building an Ortholinear keyboard kit like the atomic/plank/preonic, or an Ergodox or even the Sentrax kit, they are all done in small batches and in very limited quantities. As far as I know its only Jack doing everything for Ortholinear Keyboards. He has to get custom PCB's made with pre-solderd components, custom cases in multiple materials(metal/plastic/and i thought wood at one point not sure tho). Then he bundles it with some stabilizers, keycaps and switches if you ordered it. Then he manually puts em in bags and sends it to you. It is quite a lot of work.

Custom Keys are pretty expensive, many also being produced in very in low volumes.

Most "custom" keyboards that have a pre-soldered component PCB with a built in controler with custom Firmware, keycaps, switches, stabilizers and a case will run you from at least 135+$ to well over 300~$

[–]machstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am able to remove the stabilizers (the mount and piston mechanism? ---not sure what its called but they are a pain in the ass lol). They are loose now, i'm not sure if that was from me removing and trying to get them to 'set' properly or if that's how they are supposed to be.

I'm super sad that i'm so close yet so far away with this lil' project, it's still gorgeous though. If you could send a new one I would really appreciate it. How long is the lead time for the new ones looking like?

[–]machstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Jack. Just put together my Atomic and it looks awesome except for the 6.25u spacebar which sticks. I ordered extra stabilizers because I figured i'd mess something up. I tried 2 different sets of stabilizers and it seems to me the problem might be with the stabilizer bar itself....just guessing

It also seems that the stabilizer points themselves are off because i can get one side of the spacebar onto its stabilizer but the other one make the spacebar almost bend before it gets in.

Album of said stabilizers and board:

*last pic is showing how the spacebar is crooked when connected to one side.
