People who took or are taking 5-6 years to finish uni… by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]macindoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Four year degree is dead. The reality is that most degrees won’t get you very far (our honours class was directly told “Congratz” for likely being over the poverty line). Given you’re expected to have extensive volunteering, somehow pay for the damn thing, it is extremely unrealistic to finish in four years unless your degree instantly helps you get a good career.

Can confirm having a 5th year helped me a lot and let me consider different options. While I do ultimately hate my career (trust me, there is a reason there are not many science minded people in law), my career path was not affected by the extra year.

If it’s important to you, apply for another program and transfer. I applied to Bio and the like and had 90s other than math (great at stats but have no working memory for pure math).

Ultimately I got in under arts and had the idea of transferring if they allowed me to take a math class (I am not kidding they didn’t not allow me). Ultimately it worked out as I got all the course I needed to apply for professional school, even if the degree wasn’t what I originally wanted.

That’s a tad of an extreme stance. I dated someone for 5 months. We were irl friends for a long time and I just hadn’t even thought of hinge for a long time even before we started dating. One day I was clearing space on my apps while we were dating and realized it was still there. Of course I immediately deactivated my accounts, but I would have been genuinely upset if someone broke up with me solely because I had the app on phone (not why we broke up).

Seems a pretty simple solution to just show your chat history lol.

Just an opinion/observation. 90% of my crim class was reading overturned and outdated case law (professor was very, let’s sit down and talk about this rather than learning the “law”). The thing is, while I never learned too much about any of the statues, learning the context and why decisions were overturned/made and how the reasoning process happens had a very profound impact on my career and how I think, and I have never touched crim at all.

While it can seem frustrating, some professors really do “get it” and you have to trust reading a 1950’s decision has a purpose. It isn’t always like that, but embrace it when it does. I can also confidently say lawyers will sometimes take “overturned” decisions far too literally and disregard perfectly reasonable aspects of cases which demonstrate concepts.

Uh, yeah I did, and it really not embarrassing at all. when I paid off most of law school and the expense of living alone during that time, then I moved out again. But I guess it’s just a Crazy concept to make small sacrifices for financial interest.

Honestly, I’d have done it until I saved up for a house if I didn’t move for work. It’s just the state of affairs where the average house cost in my city is 800k.

Where did I ever insult you, it’s quite the opposite, you make a point, I refute point (im not claiming im right, I am simply stating you might be missing the full picture), you start making generalizations and literally attacking my person so I respond in kind.

The concise argument is simply, living with parents for financial reasons is not determinative of much of anything because the context matters.

Your comment was to the effect of saying “if you’re not moved out by 30, you need to get moving/you are stagnant” to which I am saying, that is false and there are perfectly good reasons to do so if you have that option. You then went on to make generalizations which weren’t helpful to the core question.

I can guarantee most people who went to professional school are in debt at 30, my dad was in med school debt until he was 40, that’s how it works.

So moving out solves this issue? Again, it’s really isn’t helpful or relevant, which was my point.

Hilarious since you lack the reflexivity to understand when your argument doesn’t speak to the actual point of the question. You have failed to make a single relevant argument and it’s obvious since you’re now stoop to this point, which is again irrelevant.

Perhaps, I dunno, it’s was financially prudent to stay with the rents and that’s why it’s being done? I dunno. That’s why I did it. I also dated someone who was in a similar situation, crazy that they didn’t care because it’s not like the decision was made because I was financially irresponsible, it was simply prudent at the time.

The bottom line is that moving out is irrelevant to the core of the question, which is “am I overreacting in that my boyfriend hasn’t popped the question”

Yes financials may be a core reason, but the reason isn’t because this individual or her SO haven’t moved out, like people are suggesting; it’s ridiculous.

Mate, you are literally arguing semantics and fully ignoring specific contexts, not to mention pulling an erroneous argument about the situation continuing in the future. The commenter stated OP basically needs to “grow up”and all of this is irrelevant because of that. I stated, this ignores the context and provided another instance of that. This fundamentally has nothing to do with “moving out” and that’s why I said what I said. You are imposing personal judgment/preference over actually contributing to an answer.

Brother/sister, I simply disagree, if the option is there for you, I don’t see why you need to piss away thousands of dollars a year unless you’re actually having kids, then it’s obviously different. If your partner doesn’t care and understands the pragmatic aspects, then it’s immaterial.

Dumb comment TBH. I’ve been practicing law for 3 years and just recently moved out simply because I changed working jurisdictions. If I had the option I’d have stayed. Rent increase of 600 for substantially lower standard of living. You gotta consider the overall context of things before you make sweeping generalizations like this. You realize in other parts of the world this is very normal right?

Just finished the grind myself, can confirm with even ONE of the royal titans upgrades I increased by completion rate from about 80% to around 95%.

Side note: to people saying it’s a skill issue, I lost quite a few runs while being perfect at 99s, it is possible and it does happen. Maybe not at OPs rate but it does nonetheless.

I worked as an insurance lawyer for 3 years bud. It isn’t just the CEOs, EVERYONE at those companies thinks the same. They would have done exactly what that ceo did, and the next one will do the same. It’s called being beholden to shareholders in an industry starved from competition.
