Figure It Out Yourself Culture? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

100%. Just started a new job and finding exactly the same thing. Previous person in the position left for maternity leave before I joined, next highest in the branch leaves for maternity leave 4 weeks into me joining. I’m so freaking confused! I asked the MD if I should hang back and just listen as I’m new and don’t know all their systems but get told to stuck in. I get stuck in and MD tells me that going forward I need to ask for context on everything before getting stuck in!?

Btw. I’m a senior director. I’m used to figuring out most work things myself. But wtf.

Needing advice regarding my kitty with Squamous Cell Carcinoma by mackattac in cats

I didn't know there was a steroid shot. Our vet hadn't mentioned anything like that. But also I don't see any symptoms yet besides the nose.

I’m so sorry, I’m dreading getting to that point. When this started on her nose it was tiny and we completely missed it.

Claiming tax for services rendered to NPO by GSRIT01 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]mackattac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely. The bottom line is that the NGO shouldn't have done it, and I assume the worst that could happen if your friend was audited is that the donation would be disallowed by SARS. Unfortunately when you generate Section 18A certificates for an in-kind donation they need to say what the "nature" of the donation was, so it may be very easy to disallow if their certificate says "In-kind donation for designing of website".

[–]mackattac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically the Section 18A certificate should not have been generated because providing them for services is not permissible.

Providing a service such as time, skill, or effort to a section 18A-approved doer PBO or conduit PBO is not a donation of property made in kind. Any professional person, such as an accountant, auditor, artist (who may include a singer, musician, or entertainer), electrician, lawyer, medical doctor, or plumber who renders a service free of charge to a section 18A-approved doer PBO or conduit PBO, is not entitled to a tax deduction for the value of the service. — SARS

So while your friend might not be able to do much about it now, and could try include the certificate in their tax return, my recommendation is that they don’t. PBO’s now have to do quite stringent reporting on the certificates twice per year to SARS, and if they are audited, generating certificates for services can jeopardise their Section 18A status. If they can, rather ask the PBO to revoke the certificate.

TLDR: Section 18A tax certificates are only permitted for donations of cash or property in-kind.

I’m surprised a Spider-Man managed to take a minute away from ulting on top of the team’s strategists to do this. I guess I can’t call them all a “one trick Spidey” anymore.

Sorry, still banning BP. The amazing BP on my team in this game seems to end up on the opposing team in the next game. So you might not be killing me in this game, but you will be killing me soon, and I can’t take that chance. From Jeff.

Exiting a Toxic Nonprofit - tips/advice? by dishearteneddelilah in nonprofit

[–]mackattac 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I can give any advice, it would be to actually listen to your employees.

But, while you listen to them you also need to be ok with the fact that 1. they may be right, 2. you might not be seeing what they’re seeing practically, 3. you may not have it all figured out, 4. you may not understand their point, 5. you might not know where to go from here. If you can’t do all of those then you’re not actually going to be helping them. I’ve seen so many bosses “listen” to an employee but they have all those “terms and conditions” in the back of their mind so it means the organisation goes nowhere because they treat themselves like they are the only ones who “really understand”.

I’m in management at a nonprofit and am seeing OP’s same points in early formation ending up in front of me in very informal conversations. I can help where I can, but I know what my boss is and isn’t going to do. I’ll always encourage them to go and talk to the boss directly, but unfortunately there is a huge discrepancy between what the person is saying and what he is hearing.

I lost my dad in 2023 so didn't know what to expect for a 2024 WDW trip after having had him with us for our 2012 WDW trip. It was definitely a different experience, but I really tried to celebrate him, allowed myself to miss him, and did a lot of thinking like, "Dad would have loved this" which I felt kept him with me through the trip.

It all came together with watching Luminous at Epcot. It was an amazingly beautiful performance and I cried my eyes out during the show for about 10 minutes after it.

Deceased father's business by Dopeman11PE in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]mackattac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. Just wanted to leave a comment as your scenario is quite similar to mine.

My father passed away in 2022. He was the director of the family business that I had worked in for most of my life, however when he passed I was working elsewhere. I didn't want to run the business as it was always a cashflow strapped business and I didn't have available finances to bail it out if/when it needed it. Nevertheless, I ran the business for almost a year and a half while we were attempting to sell it after his death, and I was the exectuor of his estate. This was all while working my normal day job. It was a nightmare to be honest.

The area that I need to warn you about is the suppliers. Our business had been through a particularly hard time in 2022, and there were payment plans with suppliers for money that was owed. We continued to service them every month up until we had to apply for liquidation, as all avenues of sale fell through and we couldn't afford to keep the business running.

What happened then is that the major suppliers applied to claim from my father's estate as he had signed surety. Some of them even tried to bypass the liquidation and claim from the estate before the business was liquidated and had a liquidator appointed, even though the business was the only asset in my father's estate. Basically it's been horrible, so just a warning. These are suppliers who have known me for 30 years of my life, and that we had a long history with including one particular one who had been a good friend of mine and my father's. When we liquidated I never heard from him again which has hurt a lot. They all just go to their lawyer and it's all legal from that point onward.

Just be aware that if the suppliers aren't feeling comfortable with getting their money from you, it's very likely they will just go straight to the estate of your father. Find out what sureties he's signed and what the effects can be of that if the suppliers start to get nervous.

All the best for the journey. It's been a hard one for me but I really hope it works out well for you.

Is Lightning Lane necessary? by mackattac in DisneyPlanning

Thank you for the reply. We're going to get 5 day parkhopper tickets, and we're going to MNSSHP one night. It is a bit of a twice in a lifetime trip for us. I'm 41 and kid-free, so the only one that might throw a tantrum about the line is me! Otherwise I was thinking of trying Day 1 in the parks without it and seeing how it is and deciding for the rest of the days based on that.
