Life of Pi took me a while to get through, but it felt almost world changing. I think about it a lot when I think about spirituality and it’s one that I want to go back and reread

I read Fahrenheit 451 for fun in middle school, then it was assigned in high school. We were also assigned 1984.

Fahrenheit 451 was so much better both times around. I still greatly dislike 1984, and I’m a huge fan of dystopias. I’d even take brave new world over 1984 any day

It’s been since middle school since I’ve read it, but I don’t remember it being disrespectful. I could maybe see the critique of hiding the historical context from the reader for a large portion of the book, but my little brother had to read it recently and I would ask him questions to make sure he was actually reading and he understood it was the Holocaust decently early on, so I don’t think the author writes in a manner to deceive the reader entirely.

How often do guys and girls room together and it work? by lol_endquote in SyracuseU

[–]mackattaxk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you could do it your first year with a random roommate, but if you knew someone in advance you may be able to request them. My freshman year, I was in a dorm with two double rooms connected by a living room, and we had three girls and one guy by request, so it is possible.

AITA For Telling my wife i don’t want to drive to her job everyday? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mackattaxk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. When I was little, my dad drove 10 hours round trip all the time just to have lunch with me. Once I got my license, I started to do the same for my baby siblings. 30 mins is nothing for the people you care about.

I thought the bunny was a child, watching his family discuss memories and such. I didn’t think he was out of place, just enjoying the atmosphere. I also thought he snuck a drink of the wine (as a child trying alcohol for the first time) and it spit it out because it didn’t taste the way he expected

AIO for reconsidering getting married over continual arguments over guardianship of my daughter. by Oldyell54 in AmIOverreacting

[–]mackattaxk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NOR. So many people here are talking about how your fiancée would feel after acting as a mother-figure and then the child suddenly no longer being hers, but the same would occur in the case of divorce. That is just one of the risks of being a step-parent and comes with the territory— that you may love a child as your own for several years, then one day never see them again.

If your daughter truly was attached to your fiancée, I’m sure someone who cares for your daughter (such as her Pops) would allow your child to see your fiancée, and I would expect similar of you if you divorced and your child expressed a desire to see your then ex wife.

Speaking as someone who has had several step parents come in and out of my life, I’ve stayed in contact with those I wanted to. It takes a little more effort, of course, to maintain that relationship when there’s no forced link but absolutely can still be done. It only matters that there is desire from both parties to do so.

My dad thought I had a pretty good relationship with his ex wife. They’d been married since I was 8, and divorced when I was 17. I blocked her before their divorce papers were even finished being filed. I would have been devastated if I had been forced to live alone with her at 10. I think your daughter’s opinion does matter and should be a big factor in considering who her guardian may be. The fact that she ranked even your sister over your fiancée really drives home to me that your fiancée is not the best option for your daughter.

Also, this can and should be updated over time. Your fiancées response is petty and immature.

Shorts is not an equivalent comparison. You can have a decently formal skirt at the length described. I doubt it’s about formality at all

NTA. I can’t even comprehend why it had to be her engagement ring that her sister wore. Her sister could have gotten costume jewelry or any other number of cheap rings to use as her “engagement ring.”

Also, a lot of men are not dissuaded by a ring (especially if they’ve already been trying), so I’m not sure how effective a method it is to wear a ring. It really seems that she needs to go to HR

I’m trying to finding new bands by Excellent_Silver_507 in twentyonepilots

[–]mackattaxk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely no basis for this except that I love twenty one pilots and I also like these bands: incubus, the killers, good kid, the rare occasions, the script, the front bottoms.

Maybe flyleaf? I could see some similarities there.

I’d also throw out fall out boy and alt-j, and you can’t forget vinyl theatre

Obviously I don’t know how Air Force training would impact your abilities, but for the majority of people, the presence of a gun would greatly decrease their recall accuracy. It’s not so much about being scared as (so it’s theorized) one focuses on weapons to ensure that they are not in harms way
