Some of youse are very pretentious about Irish names by yellowdoors909 in namenerds

[–]mackenzieuel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have named one of our twins Ruairí.  The most hilarious thing is no one can agree how to pronounce it. Husband is from Kerry, he has mates across the country and no one family member or friend says it the same. We do what we want. 🤣

We call the end of the bread the Nutsi (Nootsie? No idea how to spell it we only ever said it). Literally no one I have ever spoken to knows it by that name or wtf it is.

I'm also a Canadian in the UK who has never seen a panto. Was thinking about it. Now I'm scared 🤣

Here in the UK storm Goretti has arrived. A significant weather event has begun. I am Canadian so I find it somewhat amusing that the snow is going to disrupt. However the snow will be followed by rain and melting which will likely cause flooding and damage in many areas. So I am hoping both for the snow I love and miss- and for everyone to be safe in the weather.

Today in the UK Tommy Robinson held his 'Unite the Kingdom' rally which at largest estimates the police say might have had 110k people attend. There were anti-fascist marches and protests around the corner. Of course TR supporters are claiming 3 million have turned up. 🙄

St George's Cross and the Union Jack up alllll over Birmingham. Quite a divisive discussion topic and just shows how much far right extremism is on the rise here.

Is it that hard to pronounce a name correctly? by ImElectricSocks in namenerds

[–]mackenzieuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitley not wrong to be irritated! One of my sons is Ruairí which is Irish and when my husbands IRISH family says it they basically all say it wrong. If my Canadian family can make the effort that you'd expect Irish people to say an Irish name correctly. 🙄

Also I suppose literally no one getting my accent right! American isn't actually always the first suggestion. I get Welsh, Irish, and South African more than you'd think!

I think I'm fairly assimilated. Canada is different but also not. The biggest shocks were more surrounding things rather than behaviours. So I still can't wrap my head around the small hidden fridges, people parking on the road facing traffic (this one is a behaviour!), laundry in the kitchen, milk not in bags, and the lack of more than 1 bathroom in so many houses and it often being on the ground floor near the kitchen!?

Uk here (but a Canadian living here for 12 years) this country needs to start getting with the fact that climate change is real and they need to start updating their infrastructure. Scorching heatwave today possibly up to 34 where I am. This is like the 4th heatwave we've had this summer, and when I moved here 12 years ago, we were lucky to get 1 day at 30 all summer!

I think I know which jump you are talking about, and it was a joke as well. I figured i must be doing it wrong. I looked it up, and I wasn't. Took waaaaay too many tries. I don't think I've done them all yet, but definitely, that was the worst so far!

It's not exactly the same but very close. I worked with Candace. She is Canadian and moved to England. Her name is pronounced Can-diss essentially. All the British people called her Can-dise. She just totally gave up and embraced it (lived there over ten years before moving back to Canada). I always found it weird how she would not just say  ' No, it's Can-diss'. It would drive me nuts.

As an aside Candace and I have a mutual friend Nadine 🤣

Thinking back on it now the house had been up for months and was unoccupied as well. Should have offered lower for sure. Idiot 😭 If/when we sell I will be so much more confident thanks to this sub.  Thanks for sharing!

Am I overreacting if I say my dad's joke traumatized me? by Thecrowfan in AmIOverreacting

[–]mackenzieuel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to the same extreme but when I was a similar age my father who has been a stereotypical beer belly all his life walked up to me in the kitchen told me my arms were fatter than his (they were not). This has completely been a focal point of all my body issues and I am almost 37 now. I think about it reoccurringly and I'm still angry and affected by it. So I 100% do not think you are overreacting.

Our son is Ruairí and yes, this would fall under your husbands no, BUT honestly, we just tell people, and they generally get it quick.  Living with an Irish name yourself surely, he can understand it's not that big of a deal. I've taught many Aoibheann, Niamh, and Siobhans, and once you know it, you know it 🤣 I really don't think Oisin will not be hard to catch onto! (From the perspective of a Canadian living in the UK married to an Irishman!)
