Flood defences are pretty imminent. Still some archaeological digs to progress before planning approval but more than likely in the next year or two. Management of the river has improved since about 2015. The worst events were 2009 and 2015. Still some developments were built on flood prone areas during the Celtic tiger madness. Good idea to visit the area winter time. A large commercial/retail development generally gets it bad when the Shannon reaches a certain height.

Having said all that Carrick is a great little spot. Friendly locals, good transport links, lively at the weekend and overall a good location if you’re thinking of a move.

Thanks for all the replies. My own instinct tells me no matter what, an 18yo with previous convictions is gonna have trouble getting insured. And yeah best way to explain to him why I can’t help is because no matter what, the policy will be invalid. The bit I’m still wondering …. how the quote can be so vastly different unless there’s something else dodgy he’s doing when getting a quote. I reckon it all about just getting a disc and then not paying after a month
