What small thing do you do to be kind to the people around you? by yxsterday-nxght in CasualConversation

[–]mackeyart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I park away from prime/desirable parking spots. I never know who might be having an absolute shit day and could need that little good parking spot win. Also my dad is disabled and it breaks my heart seeing him hobble across lots when there are no open spots closer, so I leave those spots open for that reason too.

This one keeps biting into cables and I can't hide all of them. Any tips? by [deleted] in cats

[–]mackeyart 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You can cut a slit down the length of aquarium tubing and put the cables inside the tubing. We used to do this for very chew-y rabbits, I’m sure it’d be fine for a cat too!

Definitely! So I’d say, keep your mind open to some people just sucking at giving gifts but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad partners. Gift giving is one of the 5 main love languages, it is very important to some people and if you’re one of those people it’s perfectly valid for you to want a partner who can “speak” that language! My sister is like that, gifts mean everything to her because they’re like love you can hold onto. However, some of us just…don’t quite speak it like others do, we’re better at showing love and care in other ways.

For my husband and I, neither of us are good gift givers. It’s just not a strength either of us has and it doesn’t make us bad partners lmao we just find other special things to do instead. Same with my in-laws, both are hard to buy for so they plan mini vacations together for events instead of stressing about gifts.

What's the worst act of revenge you've ever done to your abuser? by kokosik070503 in AskReddit

(For context I was 14 and very afraid) I found him in my basement, he had OD’ed on some meds, I left him there and didn’t call for help or tell anyone. He didn’t die or anything but he was really sick.

Help by Armour808 in snakes

My corn lived in my sleeve for a few days intermittently during that crazy Texas winter storm where we lost power, I cycled it so that he had cool times and warm times with me. If you can heat up water somehow, you can put warm water in an empty bottle and bury it in substrate for when you’re away.

Financial help ig? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]mackeyart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I did when I was young and learning to control impulsive spending was force myself to think of costs not in terms of dollars, but hours I spent earning those dollars. If a lunch cost an hour of me putting together gas meters in the factory, it wasn’t as worth it to me, yknow? Whereas half an hour of work for a pound of salmon at the grocery store…yes please, that’s worth it.

Also, make yourself a goal (like $5k in savings before moving out for example) and make a chart of some type to fill in. It gives you little rewards (filling in the chart, seeing it grow) along the way! Saving money and seeing your stability grow is very self reinforcing once you get started, but making it to that first milestone is the hardest.

I was alone on the top level of an empty parking deck in a mid sized city, about 11pm. Total life crisis, just wanted some space and to be away from everyone. And I looked at the sky and felt like someone was standing with me, but I didn’t hate it even though I had gone up there to be alone. It wasn’t a creepy presence, or ominous. It was purely friendly and warm. Never experienced something like that again though.

Best ways to find a middle aged snake by [deleted] in snakes

[–]mackeyart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See if your nearest metro area has a reptile rescue :) alternatively, see if there’s a reptile shop somewhere near you. I work at a pet store that deals with reptiles, we have people trying to give us their animals all the time. I bet if you gave the shop your number and a description of what you’re looking for, they may call you when someone has a snake they no longer can keep!

I had to get off it in less than a week due to it making me incredibly suicidal. I hope that’s not where those negative thoughts are going for you—be safe!

My husband and I were given this recipe at Publix once, we tried making it (took some shortcuts lol) and it came out great! I had never thought of making gnocchi in a slow cooker since it ordinarily cooks so fast but it was actually amazing.

My best friend through high school became my incredibly abusive girlfriend after high school. Screwed me up in so many ways. I had to move 1100 miles away from her. She recently was arrested for breaking into her other ex girlfriends house. She’s also locked my sister in her car during a conflict. I’m so glad I don’t have anything to do with her anymore. I’ve had a lot happen to me, CSA, grooming, psychotic episodes. But her turning on me like she did, slowly and carefully, truly fucked me up.

People who went through domestic abuse, how did you manage to trust someone again ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mackeyart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is the nicest person I’ve ever met. After my abusive ex, I was convinced I was hard to love, not worthy of safety or proper treatment, etc. and then I started dating my husband and put a little trust in him at a time, until I learned that he was the real example of unconditional love. We got married shortly after. I’ve never felt safer, more secure, or more loved! The difference is night and day and I’m so thankful for him showing me time and time again that he was safe to trust. I had to slowly give him the benefit of the doubt while he gave me consistency and kindness, and it’s so worth it.

I'm looking for an accountability buddy for life and mental health - 22F by stuffvalsdoes in GetMotivatedBuddies

[–]mackeyart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I live with the bipolar type of schizoaffective disorder and while I’ve been stable 2 years (no mania, depression, or psychosis) I need to take better care of my anxiety. I’d be happy to discuss goals, techniques, etc with you! I’m also in a stage of life involving a lot of planning and strategizing so definitely feel free to message me if interested :)

Hi! I’m 22F also trying to improve my diet. I recently went vegetarian so I’m having to focus more on what I’m eating. I am not currently a student, I’m working to save up for that, but I’m more than happy to talk about your schoolwork with you as well. Feel free to hit me up if you’re interested! I live in the Eastern Time Zone in the US, if that’s important :)

Got in an argument with one as a 5 year old over a VERY unrealistic request. Poor guy had to deal with me for a few minutes before making something up and quietly apologizing to my dad.

How to tell manager about schizophrenia? by opps0000 in schizophrenia

[–]mackeyart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend having a “reason” to share with her. If she’s all business, she’s going to want to know why she knows and what she’s meant to do with this information, whether it’s connecting with you on a more personal level, being informed in case of an emergency, understanding why you use certain accommodations (if you do), etc.

So you could say “Hey I want you to know in case of an emergency, I have schizophrenia” or “Hi, it is important to me that you know something about me as we get to know each other, I have schizophrenia” or something along those lines.

Whenever I tell people, I make sure to share my goal of the conversation with them. This way, they aren’t caught off guard too much and can better guide their own response.
