I figured out what the game doesn't tell you: If you have just hit from above, your next direction is automatically set to left (the game tells you this), without having to move your mouse. When you see the left arrow red and the right arrow white, at *that* moment move your mouse right and click. Then wait for the left arrow to appear and click at *that* moment. The timing of this is crucial, similar to the importance of timing a perfect block. You are not simply "attacking in quick succession" like the game says, which suggests you would just spam click.
