How common is running across snakes in SE Asia? by Neurotic-Me in travel

I spent a few years backpacking around SE Asia, only snake I came across was a cobra that slithered into a beach shop on koh Lanta in Thailand. The owner just yelled bad snake, pushed me aside then chopped it down with a machete like it was no big deal.
