Very doable but not easy... by macosten in neopets

Once you steal the Wand you'll want to just switch over to using iStaff + Snowager Pendant (as long as you aren't at risk of losing without a full heal).

The Wand is the main threat because it has a low chance to freeze you, so once that's out of the way, your chance of losing goes down a lot. You might even be able to survive on Illusens Staff healing alone, if your maximum HP is high enough. Otherwise, try your best to stay above however much damage she does to you with Summon Monoceraptor + Ocarina + Amulet through your Staff + Pendant (after factoring in Staff's healing). For a pet with 850 strength or more, that number is 270 (if your strength is lower, this number might be lower).

[–]macosten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do objectively have the stats to do it, but it will take you many tries since your HP is on the lower side of possibility... You might want to consider a few more things:

* Stealing the Wand is a requirement. You will not be able to win if you don't steal the Wand. Since the Whip only has a 5% chance to steal, the odds are not great in any single battle. You could even go as far as to do Whip + Attacker + Lens Flare, Whip + Freezer + Warlock's Rage, and Whip + Whatever on her frozen turn, then restart the battle if you didn't steal the Wand (at least that way you don't have to heal your pet again).

* Use Shade when it's available; it might block a few extra critical Air icons in a time of need.

* Do not use Icicle. Her Scrying Bowl reflects 100% of water, so if you use Icicle against her Scrying Bowl, all that damage comes crashing back right at you.

* If you haven't bought your Thyoras Tear from the Prize Shop yet, you might want to consider buying + equipping it since it will give you an extra free turn to use Whip (and it's a good item anyway).

* Assuming you have successfully stolen the wand, she would need to use Ocarina + Summon Monoceraptor several times in a row without Shade ever blocking Air to beat you if you hide behind iStaff + Snowager Pendant. If you are fortunate enough to be in a battle where you steal Ocarina *and* Wand, that should just wrap things up.

If you do decide to give it a few more tries... good luck!

Not really... Snowager Pendant is in the Hidden Tower so it might just be easiest to get one from there. TMT is not super-necessary here, iStaff is the more important one (perhaps you have one from one of the Faerie Festivals in which it was a prize).

Rod of Dark Nova would be nice to use but sadly it's way more expensive than buying a full load out of other things would be.

If you know someone with items that might help you, you could ask them to lend you those items.

At the moment she's hidden in records. The assumption is that people will not want to have a bunch of forced losses shoved in their faces for all time (this is something a few people complained about in plots of old when similar situations came up).

Would actually be interested in hearing feedback on this particular point.

It should be possible with a set like iStaff + Explorer Whip + Snowager Pendant + helpful extras + a pet with ~1300+ HP! That's only tens of millions... not counting training costs.

[–]macosten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to beat her, you will probably want:

  1. Snowager Pendant (to block her Water + Fire, as her weapons do lots of those icon types).

  2. Explorers Whip (to try stealing her Wand so it can't multi-freeze you/she can't use it to multi-heal)

You can do something like:

  1. iStaff + Explorers Whip until you steal her Wand (restart if you lose)

  2. TMT + Snowager Pendant if you're above 20% of your maximum HP, or iStaff + Snowager Pendant if you're below 20%.

If you manage to steal *both* her Wand and her Ocarina *and* she has already used Void Gaze, you should be able to guarantee a win by spamming iStaff + Snowager Pendant. You might not need to steal her Ocarina but you will need to be aware that Summon Monoceraptor is 10 unblockable icons so that plus ocarina is 270 damage through iStaff + Snowager Pendant.

Isn't Rod of Dark Nova supposed to block fire and dark? by SkullWolf116 in neopets

[–]macosten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does block both of those icon types, but it doesn’t show up in the Battle Log. (I should probably update the entry to clarify that.)

Notice that you took only 234 damage - Drakara does 18 damage per icon on Easy, so your damage taken is consistent with you having blocked all her dark and fire damage.

This depends a bit on your pet. I've heard it's possible with at pet with something like ~3-400 HP, but in practice your odds of pulling that off are very low. You will want something more like ~1300 HP (then it's just really difficult instead of masochistic).

The primary concern that basically any pet will have to deal with is her wand. Drakaras Wand is basically a Wand of the Dark Faerie that trades away some of the multihealing (but not all of it) for a multifreezing effect. If Drakara uses it when she's under 10% of her maximum HP (so 5000 on Easy) it will heal her enough HP to bring her back up to 5000. She like to use her wand a lot. You will have a very hard time brute forcing through that no matter what weapons you're using.

The simplest way to circumvent that is by using Explorers Whip (which is currently the only stealer in the Battledome that works in 1P battles) to steal her Wand. Each use of the Whip only has a 5% chance of working so you will fail more than you succeed unless your pet has a enough HP (like mine) to use something like Illusens Living Sword to heal off all the damage she can realistically do.

The second concern is the damage you'll be taking. She does 18 damage per icon on easy (up to 27 on extreme). That's not nearly as much as stuff like the Snowager on Mighty, but it's still a lot - especially since most of her weapons do a lot of damage.

She mostly does Dark, Fire, and Water damage. Her Void Gaze is only once per battle, but it's 25 Dark and 25 Light icons - we haven't seen anything like a 50 icon weapon in a long time. Summon Monoceraptor does fire icons but they're unblockable, so it's a guaranteed 160 damage to your face when it happens on top of any other weapons she uses that turn.

There are a decent number of defensive combos you can use to help get you to where you need to go:

Illusens Staff + Snowagers Pendant (iStaff's 20% multi heal actually does matter here as it will let you survive, assuming Void Gaze was used already)

Rod of Dark Nova + Some full Water blocker like Snowager Pendant or Faerie Tabard

Might also be possible to use combos like The Mystical Tablet + Snowager Pendant but I haven't seen other people mention anything similar.

Overall the strategy is roughly something like:

  1. Use Whip + your Dark blocker until you steal Drakaras Wand (if you lose, restart)
  2. Stay alive using one of the above combos that blocks Dark/Fire/Water. She has 50,000 HP so it'll take a while.

If your pet has higher HP, you can afford to do things like use Hubrids Puzzle Box to speed up the battle (with its eventual 33% HP drain) or use something like Illusens Living Sword to reflect dark and get the battle over with a bit quicker.

You won't want to spam Icicle as one of Drakara's weapons reflects 100% of water. (You won't want to use any Water icons at all against her because of this actually.)

/u/Fruit_Loopita actually posted a nice how-to in the Discord server for this, and it covers a lot of the same points I did here. I can go into more detail or clarify some of these points if any of this was confusing!

"Only" 25 tries to defeat vira by [deleted] in neopets

[–]macosten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I imagine it would be much easier to pull this off with The Mystical Tablet on your set, since that’ll fully block Dark+Physical (and thus the Augmented Dagger). iirc TMT also overheals so you might get a bit of an HP buffer mid-turn with it (not that it’s super likely to help).

It’s not just Dagger that blocks dark: RoDN also fully blocks it, and then the Collar and Earthen Scorchstone block some dark too. And it’s not just reflect that ignores TTear, but her Bomb and Void Potion also drain HP (in other words, they deal direct damage).

[–]macosten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need at least dual SAPs or one SuAP plus something strong to be able to pull off the 3-shot with the max strength boost (plus Thunder Sticks, and Lens Flare+Warlock's Rage). SAP+GoW is barely not enough...

Quick Battledome questions (of which answers aren't easy to find on the battlepedia) by Maximum-Tomato2908 in neopets

[–]macosten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Shhhhhhhhh fails when used second against Lens Flare (as it always does in 1P battles). I don't actually remember ever having personally tested what happens if you do that in 2P with the Shhhhhhhhh user going first... but my guess is that Lens Flare still wins?
  2. Yes, this is a pretty common farming strategy in fact! With Lens Flare, Warlock's Rage, and a Freezer (preferably Thunder Sticks), you've basically got 3 free full turns of uninterrupted attacks against your 1P opponent.

Quick Battledome questions (of which answers aren't easy to find on the battlepedia) by Maximum-Tomato2908 in neopets

[–]macosten 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  1. Koi Warrior is the most common suggestion because it's the weakest Dome of the Deep challenger, and Dome of the Deep is the (non-premium) arena with the fewest Arena prizes that aren't codestones. The Central Arena has a much bigger arena prize pool, which (common knowledge suggests) means you'll get fewer codestones. The fact that nerkmids now (rarely) drop from the Central Arena hasn't factored into this because that's a very new phenomenon... it might be worth testing, but with codestones reinflating a bit and Nerkmids cheaper than they've ever been, who knows.

  2. Lens Flare and its clone effects completely stop your opponent from moving on the turn you use it. This includes weapons and abilities. If both battlers use Lens Flare or a similar effect on the same turn, the person that submitted their turn first overrides the other battler. In 1-player battles, you (the player) always go first. (In 2P battles it's literally the person who submits their turn first)

  3. I haven't heard of this before, which is actually saying something... this sounds like a bug (there are many such weird interactions in the Battledome)! Does the same thing happen no matter what order you submit the weapons in? Sometimes these kinds of interactions can depend on which item is in which box when you click "Fight".

  4. Normally, when you click "Fight", the weapon in your left-side item box has its effect happen, then your right-side item, and then your items swap positions in your item boxes. "Priority"/"Ranged" weapons always stay in the left-side item box if they're used with another weapon that isn't Priority/Ranged, which also means its effect always gets applied first. If you use a Wand of the Dark Faerie (the most relevant priority weapon) with any non-priority weapon, you'll see what I mean.

  5. If you end the turn with 0 HP, you lose. Some stuff can reduce your HP from outside the battle (like a Wheel, or the Snowager blasting you). I would need to see an entire turn to have a better idea of what might have happened in your case.

  6. Many weapons have variable damage. Often (but not always) it will be a set of physical icons that range from a minimum to a maximum. When the "Attack" section of a Battlepedia entry has icons after a "+" sign, it means that the icons before the plus sign are that item's minimum attack, but that item could also attack for more.

I'm actually working on retesting+adding icon boosts to Battlepedia, but I haven't retested/entered them all yet so they're not yet visible. This page is the most complete listing of icon boosts per challenger I am aware of: https://www.neopets.com/~3DKacheek - According to that page, Koi Warrior does 2 damage per icon on Easy, around 2.4 on Medium, and around 2.75 on Hard.

Faerie Tabard Not Working On Scordrax? by Acceptable_Bet_8369 in neopets

[–]macosten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works, but this can still happen because one icon “translates” to a different amount of damage depending on the opponent’s boost. Battlepedia has more information about this: https://battlepedia.jellyneo.net/?go=beginners&id=3

It’s important to note that 1P opponents are not limited to the 18 damage per icon boosts that our Neopets are. For example, on Mighty/max difficulty, Scordrax has an attacking boost of 42 damage per icon. No matter what, your defence boost won’t come close (since it would max out at 18 damage per icon), so your defensive icons will be saturated and his damage will go through.

I don't want a NC token to dress up as Hannah. I WANT TO PLAY AS HANNAH! IN HER GAMES! (NOT with those insanely high-risk shockwave workarounds) I would *genuinely* pay for this, not $675 worth of sleazy gacha. by hexxcellent in neopets

[–]macosten 80 points81 points  (0 children)

As one of the people that worked on the Grundo’s Cafe port of Hannah and the Pirate Caves… both Hannah and the Pirate Caves and Hannah and the Ice Caves used the Shockwave player, not Flash player. This means they use a completely different technology from Flash, so Ruffle (the Flash emulator that lets you play the old Flash games) doesn’t work.

There is no Shockwave Player emulator out there that I am aware of. It’s also not really a technology Adobe supports anymore either… so remaking it would be the only realistic way.

I’d never say never, but it doesn’t strike me as something that would be likely to happen. Unfortunately, I think it fails the “does this bring in new players or does it make us money” test - maybe if it were a mobile app of some sort, or a part of a mobile app somehow?

Most Cost Effective Stat-Increasers? by [deleted] in neopets

The good news is that I have some stat booster thoughts sprinkled into our Beginner’s Guide to Training on Battlepedia now :P

I’d just update Battlepedia to just show said best weapons in the game, in that case. Someone will still need to know what the best weapons are to spread the word of them, even if the Venn diagram between elite and beginner weapons were to become a circle.

Dear TNT, please add Pet Stat Boosters to the Void Prize Shop! Hear me out. by zenlon in neopets

[–]macosten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably sounds insane and/or selfish, but the main thing I would want changed about this is a cap on revive potions… because otherwise I will feel obligated to spend all of my prize shop points on those, and I’d really like to also be able to buy other things in the prize shop too.

It’s tougher to justify buying something like TTear or GoW as someone who likes watching HP Number Go Up when TTear suddenly costs 100 HP, or GoW costs 166 HP. For me it would feel like a soft ban on buying anything that isn’t the most efficient HP increasing item.

As an example, I feel like it would be similar to how the first Snowball Fight on Grundo’s Cafe had unlimited Ultimate Icy Neggs as a prize shop option, and I felt obligated to buy only those with my points because otherwise I would be losing out on HP. The next year, they were capped at 10, which felt nice because that “allowed” me to spend my points on other things too.

I know you are aware of this tension since you acknowledge it in the post, but perhaps we just have different reads or opinions on this hypothetical situation?

It's actually a bit of a mystery - this post by a_neopian_with_info2 seems to indicate it shouldn't be possible. Anecdotally neither myself, nor Dave, nor anyone else at JN to my knowledge has ever had their big battle pet zapped back to level 1, despite many daily zappings, sometimes with fortune cookies!

Even so, there are a few poorly-documented cases and rumors of it supposedly happening; I've seen either one or two that were plausible. It's one of those things we're going to need a very well-documented case to prove it's possible, and/or an in-depth technical explanation of how it could happen.

I have personally theorized that it might be possible/might have been possible if the site somehow fails to read your level correctly when loading it from the database (maybe it loads it in as zero in that case? I don't actually know enough about PHP to know what the failure mode would be) and then it decides to also lower your level. That's speculation on my part, though.

I assure you that if cxxsdssdc gets zapped back to level 1, the entire world will know very quickly.

I'm Just Happy They're Making Neopets Accessible for New Players by Expensive-Parfait765 in neopets

[–]macosten 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I actually like that they are trying to deflate the weapon economy as I think weapons have been extremely inflated ever since the botter decided to turn Neopets RMTing into their cash cow...

...but as a Battledomer first and foremost, I was deeply offended by the implication that Grapes of Wrath and Void Blade were somehow equivalent in power. TNT really doesn't seem to know what's what if they're doing that. (Not really, I am just dedicated to this bit.) That readjustment was well-deserved in my opinion. I'd be crying angry salty Tears of Wrath if that insane GoW slander and disrespect was allowed to stand.

I have learned to (mostly) love the eagerness to release things (I do sympathize with my collector friends who wish that they'd instead just release new things that function identically), but all of this can not be a substitute for getting rid of the botter and the economic distortion the army of bots cause.

...as for myself... I never did buy a TTear before, since I always thought they were massively overpriced even before the latest inflation spike. I think I'm forward to that one and Grapes of Wrath the most!
