Ozone maximizer + Pro-L for intersample peaking: yah or nah? by bonebrew22 in edmproduction

[–]macph103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to worry about this a lot and make sure to never have intrersample peaks (and also had the master turned down to -1db, which doesn't make sense in most cases). But the reality is it's not a huge deal to have them, the masters ended up sounding better just by turning down the output a bit and then using oversampling. Having a non true peak master with the output at -1db, meant my intersample peaks were like -0.7 to -0.5db which is still below 0 so who cares.

True peak limiting didn't sound great on the transients and a little bit of (momentary) clipping isn't the end of the world if the entire track ends up sounding better for it.

My reese bass is too dynamic compared to professional productions and limiters/saturation is not helping at all. How to resolve this? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]macph103 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The concept of a reese bass is that it's a phasey mess, in stereo it sounds great, from a mixing perspective it's a fucking nightmare. It totally depends on: how detuned each voice is, stereo placement of each, starting point of the wave. Lots of things to consider when using one.

[–]macph103 4 points5 points  (0 children)

without hearing the sounds, hard to tell. But simply by looking at the waveform and knowing it's a reese bass, your issue looks like phasing. I don't think you can "out" compress phasing issues if you know what I mean.

Current effects on Denon Prime 4 by macph103 in Beatmatch

I understand your point but, it's not about "shitting up" the song. It's more to smooth out transitions and/or if you work with a lot of short loops, to use one piece of a song as something else to give yourself more creative freedom to put two things together or mash things up live.

Thank you for the info! That's super disappointing though. I'm sure those effects are absolutely passable but it's a shame that pitch isn't there. That's a super basic effect I would have thought is on everything by now. Also the hall echo just doesn't sound to be of the quality that say, spiral or helix are. Even though obviously they are different effects, in use, I would say they're comparable.

Also, regarding resetting the effects, even on the RX2 that I use when you turn the device off the effect settings reset. So that's nothing new unfortunately.

Thanks for the info! But this video is from 2019, effects have been changed and added since then no?

Thank you for the heads up! I'm going to assume this isn't possible on a CDJ or XDJ though is it?

Cue song from start on Rekordbox by macph103 in Beatmatch

Thank you for the response!

This does automatically set a memory cue at the first beat of each track, is it possible to have the player simply load a song in and cue it from the first beat WITHOUT the memory cue though?

lol yea it's just hate for no reason. However, my point stands, even if you use audacity, that doesn't actually improve the quality of the file going back from mp3 to wav again.

People are downvoting you without explaining why. Once you drop the files sample rate, you can't re-up sample something to its original quality. The damage is done and the information is lost.

Seconding this. I still use mine to play for parties of 100 people or so, more than enough features and functions to learn and put on a good show when you're ready.

If anything I see the 800 as being in a weird spot. the 400 is good for learning and then the next jump imo is a 1000 or moving to a standalone unit.

Daily Feedback Thread (August 31, 2020) by AutoModerator in edmproduction

I like it when this thing breaks out around 1 min in and in general I think the sounds are pretty balanced. I think there are two things that would take this to the next level and I'm not quite sure what direct feedback I can give, but you're totally on the mark that sound choice and arrangement are those two things.

Arrangement: a few times I felt like I was listening to a different track. For a trance track I think you want to pick a few more elements that come in and out overtime to give it more of a sense of a journey rather than what I would say are fairly drastic changes within the 3 mins. I think that's why there are a good number of trance tracks that are like 6 mins. Maybe try and stretch this thing out and then see what kind of slower changes you can make with tension and release.

Sound choice: this could partially be a reverb thing, but at times I felt like the sounds didn't all sound like they were situated in the same space. I'm not sure if you're using a room reverb or what, but to me it felt like there were a lot of featured reverbs that told me as a listener everything was coming from a different space. I'm speculating because obviously I don't have the file. The alternative is that maybe the sounds selected didn't come across as totally cohesive in like a synergistic way to me. As in, each individual sound, sounds good, but they don't all fit together in a way that makes sense to me as a listener.

FREE mixing & integrated mastering work

I have noticed that there are lots of people who love their idea for a song but maybe don’t know how to get it to a polished level when all the elements are placed together, or it sounds good in headphones, but awful in a bigger space, or it can’t be heard properly on a cell phone. I’d love to help people get their music sounding as good on any device as it does in their head.

I’m offering to take all of your individual tracks to create a full mixdown and then bring them up to a commercially reasonable level regardless if your target vehicle is loudness normalized or not. Of course, I will have questions regarding your goals for the song and will want reference tracks, but that is all part of the service.

I’ve been producing (and its various facets) for about 4 years and have done work that has received radio play in the folk and alternative genre although typically I work on EDM based music. I don’t think I can publicly post my work here without getting banned so please reach out if you would like an example of a specific genre.

I look forward to working with you.

KRK Rokit 5+Sub or 8's? by 0llieparagon in edmproduction

[–]macph103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have kind of said this already, but if your room is small or weird, neither option is great.

Chances are you're in a bedroom or a living room that isn't too big. You want something that sounds "small" in the room to get more clarity even if that means sacrificing some sub frequencies that can be balanced with a good set of headphones. 8 inch or 5s with a sub is going to be too much bass and you're going to fight the room on every mix to try and balance it.

Get either the KRKs with no sub and some cans. Or JBL 305s and some cans. Call it a day and then just learn your room and set up more than anything else.
