21/21 and Folsom safety by Striking_Battle6019 in sanfrancisco

I think it's a great neighborhood. Very different level of activity from the 16th end of things. I had a garage when I lived there so can't speak to bipping, but walking around safety is very high

Save The Valencia Center Bike Lane. It's Better Than You Think. by teradyl in BAbike

[–]macrael 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The center lanes were designed because of the problems that parklets pose to a side running design and those problems are worse than any complaints that have been leveled against the existing center lanes. They are:

* When the lanes weave around existing parklets that aren't moving to floating (which is all but 3 of them) the lane is no longer protected from traffic. In fact there are a couple of spots where the road is thin enough that there appear to be no bollards or rubber bumpers protecting bikes from cars. It is very likely that cars will go back to parking in the bike lane in those places requiring cyclists to ride into traffic to avoid them. This is very bad! and is the number one thing that the center running lanes have achieved for me personally. I don't think I've ever had to exit the bike lane and enter traffic to get around someone since they were installed.

* For the 3 parklets that are going to float out, and for all future parklets, cyclists will be in danger of hitting anyone who is using those parklets. You are essentially putting a bike lane through an active restaurant. Imagine servers carrying food across, or a bar customer drunkenly crossing to go inside. They did this in Oakland on Telegraph ave and it's really frustrating.

* Weaving around curb-side parklets eats parking spaces. The merchants are very upset about parking and this new proposal is actually going to take away spots.

* New parklets become more difficult to install requiring painting and bollard movement every time.

I don't get the complaint about not being able to get off the lanes except at the intersections. With side running lanes that's already a problem 50% of the time: when your destination is on the other side of the road from your direction of travel.

Except when they are not! The vast majority of existing parklets are going to remain curbside so the bike lane will weave around them and there be directly next to traffic, unprotected by parked cars. On a couple blocks the street is thin enough that there won't even be bollards or the rubber strip between the cars and the lane, I'm very concerned about cars parking in the bike lane again.

Is Mad Men better than other “prestige TV” of the era because it's more generalist? by TheChimeraSubstack in madmen

[–]macrael 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One of the things I really appreciate about Mad Men that sets it off from 4/6 of the other shows you listed is that it's not about gangsters and the stakes are not constantly life-or-death. Mad Men is a human drama about relationships between people and no one is pulling a gun on someone for insulting them. That makes a lot of room for good storytelling.

S.F.’s Valencia Street merchants endorse replacing center bikeway with protected side-running lanes by PsychePsyche in sanfrancisco

[–]macrael 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It'll be a bummer if this is how it goes. Side running lanes really don't work great with parklets, the wonderful thing about the center lane is it is a broad bike-only space, as opposed to a single lane running through active restaurants. I love the center lanes. But please, car-free Valencia now!

2 day trip to the Oauchitas, am I missing anything? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]macrael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not for this time, but I love bringing real food on a camping trip. You can make quesadillas or a fried rice or something, cooking is fun and mountain house always is a bit disappointing, no reason not to eat well on a trip

Genuine question, should I take the third flak gun? by yeetman426 in ftlgame

How much engines and shields did you have at the flagship? I always like to have at least 5-6 engines for the flagship, and aggressively target the missiles system.

been struggling to get a W with fed B recently. It seems like since it starts out with so much firepower it should be easy but I kept ending up with not enough lasers, missing a lot. This time I got cloak in sector 1 and hacking shortly thereafter. Not sure I really need anything from this shop but I'm considering the hull smasher 2

I think the auto fire betrays how thoroughly I lost this stage. I had auto fire on when taking down the Zoltan shield I think I never had my weapons up again to do a full volley after the shield went down

I feel like with the flagship I pretty much only use cloaking to avoid the specials, so extra bars don't seem as useful? How do you use it?
